Withers: Republicans are going after each other

By James Withers, contributing editor, 365Gay Blog 10.27.2008 9:05am EDT

This will earn me no love here but I’m so into the fighting over in GOP land. From Sarah Palin not heeding the messages set up by her running mate John McCain or the blame game on why McCain’s campaign is stuck in a rut, it’s all great cat fight theater. Think Sunset Tan but with a smarter cast.

Well the fun continues with Christopher Buckley calling out “comrade in arms” Rush Limbaugh. Buckley has been in trouble ever since he went wobbly and announced his support for Barack Obama. Limbaugh, a smarter version of Sean Hannity, was predictably put out by Buckley’s endorsement and decided to make Buckley pay for his heresy.

Buckley responded  by noting that Limbaugh’s reading skills are slightly suspect (can’t wait for El-Rushbo’s response to that). Aside from the pop-corn thrills what also strikes me about this whole family affair is that it comes down to a battle over the intellect and slogans. Back in the day, a certain bookish seriousness was the undertow for the  conservative movement. Republicans would quote books and authors (not Ann Coulter) and if you meant to debate them, and win,  you had to come correct.

Now Republicans yell socialism or rant and rave about how Barack Obama is not a citizen. No voter, no matter where he/she falls on the political divide, wants to vote for a party that is more slogan than practical programs. You would think the GOP would understand this.

Yes, and there’s a word for today’s Republican leaders: demagogues.

    • beautiful piece :)
I love the picture as well.
The GOP seriously needs a ‘home makeover’ or else they will probably disappear. (I prefer the latter to be honest)
