Withers: Some Republicans just can’t let go of race
Some Republicans need to be dope-slapped daily when it comes to race. A local California GOP operative named Diane Fedele , with women of color in her group, thought it would be funny to email folk a food stamp “coupon” with Barack Obama’s face on it. And what surrounds his visage? A bucket of chicken, spare, ribs, a pitcher of Kool-Aid, and one slice of watermelon.
I’m surprised she didn’t include crack. Here is what Fedele said when told the flyer was slighlty racist:
“I didn’t see it the way that it’s being taken. I never connected. It was just food to me. It didn’t mean anything else.”
It was just food to me. That’s funny.

I think the sold school term is it is rich… and ignorant

As a result of Nixon’s southern strategy, the South’s most ardent segregationists (mainly George Wallace’s followers) moved into the Republican Party in droves. That’s how the GOP became a majority party. So, it’s not surprising that some Republicans are racists (and homophobes). What’s surprising is how open, uninhibited, and unashamed they are about it.
