Withers: Bush still against same-sex marriage

By James Withers, contributing editor, 365Gay Blog 10.14.2008 9:27am EDT

You would think with an approval rating only a little better than my negative bank account that President George W. Bush would keep his public statements to a minimum. I thought Bush’s “to-do” list would be jammed packed with stuff on the economy, but the president has always been sensitive to the GOP base and that has not changed even in the waning days of his administration.

After the Connecticut Supreme Court ruled the state’s laws prohibiting same sex marriages were unconstitutional, Bush released a statement taking the judges to task.

“It’s unfortunate that activist judges continue to seek to redefine marriage by court order — without regard for the will of the people. Today’s decision by the Connecticut Supreme Court illustrates that a federal constitutional amendment may be needed if the people are to decide what marriage means.”

The words are pure Bush-speak. Bemoaning “activist judges”, pointing to the will of the people, and a call to transform the Constitution, the legal document that will speak well of the country when we all are just lost memories.

He ends it all by noting that he continues to be “firmly committed to protecting the sanctity of marriage.” If I were an anti-same-sex marriage partisan this line would make me laugh. Bush talked a great game, gave a whole lot of speeches and press releases  announcing how he was for the “sanctity of marriage.” Lots of talk, but where is the action?

He played anti-same sex marriage advocates for suckers, making them think that his words would translate into something concrete. He continues his game even now when it’s clear the topic has passed him by.

    • Why would we expect anything different from a man who for so long long has suffered with cranial rectal inversion?

    • It’s time Rove/Cheney/Bush respected the constitutions that government officials are sworn to uphold as the TRUE will of the people, but that’s just not going to happen, is it?

Enforcing the federal and state constitutions is not being an “activist” judge, it’s being a judge.

    • Bush so handily forgets that he was put into the White House by an “activist judge”. If Bush had an ounce of grace (nevermind brains), he’d immediately initiate laws that guaranteed ALL citizens were treated equally before the law, the way the Constitution ‘promises’ (the one you have, not the one Bush would like to turn it into). This would include allowing his Vice-President’s daughter to marry her “partner”. (Ugh, what a term.)

Since when were government benefits doled out based on the ’sanctifiability’ of one’s relationships? (And ’sanctifiable’ in whose eyes? I was married in MY Church.)

    • What a joke! The BuschReich appeals to the Constitution when it suits them; the rest of the time, it’s “just a g*d-damned piece of paper,” according to the Resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. In a hundred years, most of us will be dead, the Constitution will still stand, and George W. Bush will be only be remembered by ANYONE as ABSOLUTELY THE WORST POSSIBLE PRESIDENT (past, present, OR future) THAT THE UNITED STATES HAS EVER HAD.

    • Interestingly (and unsurprisingly?), as a result of theat poll indicating most people in CT support the ruling, the “activist judges” are just making a ruling in favor of what the population itself believes in.

    • Man, the next president better be a person that doesn’t have fearful hate in him or her. I’m tired of having aleader that says he’s good because of his or her faith but turns around and says mean and hateful things and/or tries to make it legal to discriminate agaisnt other people. They ruin it for sencere and kind people that tries to make the world a better place for everybody. Goodness!
