Withers: Brad gives money to Prop 8 but not Ellen?

Over at the Advocate Jacob Reitan, former head of Soulforce, wonders why Ellen DeGeneres has not made a donation (at least as of October 11) to the California’s Proposition 8. Mmmmmmmm. Something to chew on.
PS: Reitan is a grad student and he gave $500.

If you haven’t already, you can join the “Get Ellen to Give” campaign on Facebook, a good-spirited effort to inspire Ellen to give to No on 8. Join here: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=26476114690

ELLEN! Where are you? Put your money where your mouth is! We NEED all the help we can get.
Step up to the plate, girl. Your marriage could be in jeopardy, too! We’re waiting….
Well as of today, 10/14 Ellen created a video message against Prop 8. Surely that cost money to get it aired… and sometimes something like that does much more than a monetary donation.
Leave my sweetie alone, you big bullies. I’m sure msE has done more than most of us. Watch her, she’s a scream. So funny and talented. She currently has raised oodles for breast cancer research Love you sweetie. PAIX Doug
L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and actor Eric McCormack (Will and Grace) headlined a fundraiser that pulled in $250,000 to fight Prop. 8 over the weekend. It is dissapointing that Ellen has declined to give any money to fund this effort. But quite frankly, she’s not the only celebrity with money in Hollywood. And since she has made it clear that she’s not interested, maybe we should just leave her alone.
Come on people, all this talk is great but quit waiting for the celebs to bail us out. My wife and I have donated every cent we can to NO on 8. We opted for white gold bands with no diamonds, a private ceremony, a honeymoon at home. The money we would have spent went to NO on 8. We have done without haircuts and carwashes so we could send that money. We have even sent the money we got from recycling. It is time to donate. If they take this basic right away from us what is next? Gay Pride? Gay bars? Gay cruises? Quit going to Starbucks for a week, don’t go to the bar 1 weekend and send that money to NO on 8. My wife and I are by no means rich but we are finding the money to donate, you can too.
Donate. Go door-to-door. Phonebank (from anywhere in the country). Write letters or emails to California newspapers. Do whatever you can even if you don’t live in California. Go to http://www.NOonPROP8.com for more info.
This just in from the LA Times:
Father Geoffrey Farrow is a longtime Catholic priest who revealed recently that he is gay and opposed to Proposition 8, the November ballot initiative that would overturn the California Supreme Court’s decision earlier this year allowing same-sex marriage. As a result, Farrow has been stripped of his job as a parish priest in Fresno, including his salary and health benefits.
_____________
As someone who was raised catholic, I freely say the Catholic church is now a homophobic multi-million dollar corporate entity. Stripping an ethical and honorable Priest of his calling for standing up for his principles is just plain wrong. The Catholic Church needs to be taxed for making politically motivated employment decisions, and making clear its positions on California’s ballot propositions, and their choice of McCain for President.
Could it be that she made it anonymously? Maybe there’s something in her contract with NBC/UNIVERSAL that forbids her to announce any type of political contribution that she might make. Didn’t Rosie O’Donnell slam Ellen about her pitiful role and NBC and she can’t really talk about gay issues etc? Oh well, I’m sure we’ll here about the real story soon enough.
