Withers: George Will wonders what McCain is doing
I can’t help myself, but I like George Will. For some 365 readers this Will love confirms my Log Cabin status, but the columnist and I rarely agree . However, he is a a baseball fan and is one of the few Republican writers who doesn’t get tongue tied when race is the topic.
In his most recent column, Will wonders what type of campaign John McCain is running. An economy that is taking a beating, but McCain wants to spend the last few weeks campaigning on Obama’s former minister and some guy who, despite his radical past, is now a respected member in the Chicago educational community.
“In this context, the McCain-Palin campaign’s attempt to get Americans to focus on Obama’s Chicago associations seem surreal — or, as a British politician once said about criticism he was receiving, ‘like being savaged by a dead sheep.’”
Aside from this disconnect, Will is also confused about what type of Republican McCain really is. At the Tuesday night debate McCain threw out his American Homeownership Resurgence Plan, an idea that even the most liberal Republican wonders about. And let’s put it out there: McCain’s concern about home mortgages now is slightly desperate. Foreclosures have been an issue for awhile.
Ultimately though, Will is worth reading because he understands and appreciates irony. Recently Obama compared McCain’s speeches about greed on Wall Street to the same rhetoric of Rev. Jesse Jackson (and Obama wasn’t making nice with this connection).
“What fun: one African-American Chicago politician distancing himself from another African-American Chicago politician by associating McCain with him.”
A conservative who gets the humor/irony this election season has added to the country’s racial calculus? What’s not to love?

Withers, do you really believe that a terrorist can be a respected part of a community? Well Damn! Welcome Bin Laden right on in. Is there a home available in your neighborhood?
I’m a Democrat (and most definitely an Obama fan), but I do like George Will.
What’s not to love? Well the fact that he never lets facts get in his way would be a start…
