Withers: One more month and presidential campaign turns real nasty
Sarah Palin is earning her salary as John McCain’s attack dog (I’m not calling Palin a dog; just using a rather standard political phrase). The Alaskan governor took the gloves off this week-end and went after Barack Obama for his ties with Bill Ayers.
Ayers, the founder of the Weatherman and a guy who thought bombing was a good political tactic, is now a college professor. He and the junior Illinois senator have worked together on a number of education projects. Palin hit Obama hard for being connected to a 1960’s radical who seems to show no shame about his past.
“Our opponent though, is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect that he’s palling around with terrorists who would target their own country,” Palin said at a Colorado rally.
This strategy should come as no surprise. Ayers and Rev. Jeremiah Wright are weak points in the Obama armor. Obama’s narrative is a politician who is a firm believer in the country’s promise. Knowing these two gentleman throws that arc off the tracks and voters have every right to ask Obama about his ties to men most Americans would disagree with.
But let’s not delude ourselves. Palin understands numbers and from all the polls, she and McCain are chasing the Obama/Biden train. One way to catch up is to go negative.
When Obama gets the Wright/Ayers question tomorrow in the debate, he shouldn’t sigh or accuse McCain of dirty politics. He should just look in the camera and explain why he isn’t either man.

Whatever questions come up for Obama, I hope he brings up the Keating 5 debacle, abortion and importantly, the refusal by Palin and her gang to submit to a subpoena regarding Troopergate that she’s chosen to ignore. Similarly Karl Rove defied three subpoenas, last year….why hasn’t McCain spoken out on that if he’s such a maverick? Nobody is above the law. McCain obviously supports Palin on this one involving Troopergate
ReplyJohn McCain is a war criminal. “And thus it was on October 26, 1967, that John McCain, flying in his A-4 Skyhawk, was hit by a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft artillery shell just as he fired off his missile at—not a military target, not an army unit, not a battleship—but an electricity generating station that supplied electrical power to a number of neighborhoods. The target, according to McCain, was in ‘a heavily populated part of Hanoi.’ Heavily populated. A plane from the sky raining missiles down on a heavily populated area of a nation’s capital.” – Michael Moore
ReplyHow come Rev. Jeremiah Wright is still a ‘weak point’ for Obama, but Palin’s witchcraft prayin’, speakin’ in tongues pastor isn’t?
Why doesn’t America know his name (or much about her faith)?
ReplyAfter watching the VP debate, I couldn’t understand the lies spewing out of Palin’s mouth. If she wants people to support her and McCain, she needs to know what she’s been told to say. I could be the VP candidate, if all I had to do is read a paragraph full of lies and make cute little smiles at the public. Beautiful lipstick soccer moms are not what I want in a vice president, I want someone with experience instead of a governor of Alaska.
ReplyGeorge,
Because Jeremiah Wright had the audacity to point out that America supported the apartheid regime in South Africa, as well as Australia’s immoral “white continent” policies. If the Supreme Court didn’t drag the United States into the 20th century - kicking and screaming the whole way - we’d probably still have Jim Crow laws in some parts of this country.
Wright has made many questionable statements over the years. In particular, I disagree with his beliefs about the origin of AIDS. But there’s also a lot of inconvenient truths mixed in with the angry rethoric. Rather than grapple with those historical facts, however, Americans prefer to call him a crazy man (and pretend everything’s hunky-dory).
ReplyWhen do the Democrats bring out their attack dogs. Lord, I’d like to fill that job description right now. Let me at her.
Anyway, the newest spin out of Palin’s mouth is that she is keeping SNL actors employed. I believe that Sarah isn’t bright enough to come up with those SNL responses herself. The GOP has lots of spin-meisters working 24/7 for this VP candidate. Those are the folks Sarah’s keeping in business.
ReplySarah Palin is dangerous, and will say anything to get McCain elected. Her church sponsored speakers that want to try and change gay people into straight people, and she tried to ban books with gay content from her local library when she was mayor of a small Alaska town. She will say and do anything to get votes.
ReplyMcCain is a coward and his nature is to be argumentative anyway because he hates to be told what to do, that also takes away his title Maverick.
ReplySarah Palin, early on in her career, studied at the Dick Cheney school of government and learned to go hunting with a shotgun in one hand and a six pack in the other. It’s no wonder that she has had such great success as “Sarah Sixpack.” She has all she needs to be VP.
ReplyWhy are they talking about the pass when we need to look in the future
