Withers: Ten random thoughts

By James Withers, contributing editor, 365Gay Blog 09.28.2009 8:33am EDT

10-4-top

1. Never thought I would see director Roman Polanski in handcuffs.

2. What does it mean that Bill Clinton now supports gay marriage?

3. If any old head goes on some “the young these days” rant, tell her to put a sock in it. The kids are going to be all right.

4. Any Detroit Lions fans out there?  How ya feeling this morning?

5. Looks like the police from  New York City are dropping the ball when it comes to protecting and serving the gay community.

6. RIP Bill Safire.

7. Can’t lie. Shocked that Michael Steele is still the head of the RNC. Was convinced he would be gone by now.

8. October 11 is barreling down on us. Any ideas on how many show up?

9. Bronx’s favorite daughter, Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor, threw the ceremonial pitch at Yankee Stadium on Saturday. This year could only get better for the associate justice if the Yankees, she’s a fan, win the World Series.

10. You know New York governor David Paterson is in trouble when he can’t get love from a sports columnist.

    • Bruce, let me try this again.

      1) I never suggested there was no crime, and I never suggested that he wasn’t guilty, and I never suggested that it wasn’t disgusting or reprehensible.

      2) There was a plea deal, and part of the plea deal was that Polanski admitted that he raped then-13-year-old Samantha Geimer.

      3) The plea deal was unilaterally targeted for revocation by a pissed-off Superior Court judge (now dead) and a prosecutor more concerned with winning a pissing contest than with following through with a plea deal.

      4) Polanski was facing no prison time under the plea deal, so he had no motive to flee EXCEPT for concern about a judge and a prosecutor’s office essentially looking to trick him into a prison term of up to 15 years. They screwed the pooch. Polanski was ready to comply with the plea deal.

      5) The statute of limitations on these charges has long since passed. The victim filed a civil suit and that case is long since resolved.

      6) There was nothing stopping pursuit of his extradition for the past 31 years.

      7) The victim has repeatedly requested that the prosecutor stop pursuing Polanski, because HER opinion is that it’s NOT about justice, it’s about deflecting attention from both the court and the prosecutor’s office and their effort to avoid responsibility for screwing up a plea deal.

Again, I’m not justifying or minimizing. He did it. Keep in mind that it’s the VICTIM who is opposed to this. This has already been addressed in civil court, in her favor. It’s the VICTIM who has called out the LA DA for continuing a 30-year pissing contest. I’m more inclined to listen to an articulate woman who’s a strong advocate for herself, than I am a bunch of self-justification from a prosecutor’s office with a long history of less-than-stellar performance (remember how they managed to botch the OJ case?).

    • Drewski….. Roman Polanski has admitted to drugging and plying with alcohol a 13 year old girl!

      Then admitted to raping her!
He should have been brought to justice years ago, YES, but he is now being brought to justice.
Time and victom apathy do not absolve him of penalty nor does his career choice.

Anyone who can contemplate letting him away with this horrible crime is not a parent.

      Polanski is a MONSTER !!!!
Anyone who feels that he should be left to live out his life a free man is a DUMB CUNT!

    • Per BBC, the victim has long since requested that the case be dropped, due to the pain of the matter being kept alive in the media and the courts decades after it happened. This has been going on for 32 years, and Polanski has been in Switzerland and France in plain sight. Why the arrest now, especially in Switzerland? It’s like a show trial now, not a real effort at justice. It’s true that adults should keep hands off of 13-year-old girls and their erogenous zones. The girl who was 13 back then is a woman today, and she’s been very clear in saying that her wish is that the matter be dropped. She’s still defined by this case, far more than he is, and she’d like to take control of this by leaving it behind. I guess it’s messy for the prosecutor when s/he presumes to speak for the victim in pursuing this case in some form, but it seems kinda patronizing to do so when it’s against the express wishes of the victim. Schedule an appearance in a French or Swiss court, plead out the case with some sort of large fine, and maybe bar Polanski from the US if that’s what the victim wants.

    • Bruce,

How old are you? 11? 12? 13? You write some sexist crap (as you are wont to do), get called on it, and respond with something that would shame a middle school kid.

      James

    • “Debra ( dumb cunt) Winger.”

In the world of Bruce it’s impossible to be critical of a woman without being sexist.

    • Debra ( dumb cunt) Winger thinks Roland Polanski should be absolved of the crime because he makes movies.
The unemployed actress surfaces to condone pediphiles activities should be banned from Hollywood too!
When will Hollywood and that entertainment machine, mascarading as art, realize that they are not above the law!

    • 1: from CNN…
Investigators in the United States say Polanski drugged and raped a 13-year-old girl in the 1970s. Polanski pleaded guilty in 1977 to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, but he fled the United States before he could be sentenced and settled in France.

It’s a wonder he was not brought back sooner. I am sure the US knew where he went.

2: It was a different environment when Bill was in office. It is easy to point to the things he did and say they were bad, but in context he prevented much worse.

3: It is amazing how you forget the things you did growing up and instead remember walking to school in the snow barefoot.

4: The Lions did manage a win. Did not see the game, but the score looks like a good game. 14-19

5: This is one more reason we need as many folks as possible in DC the 10th-11th.

      6: Neutral on this one.

      7: They never learn.

8: There will be 3 in my group. We should have 300k. Wake up folks this is your life/lively hood we are fighting for.

      9: Go Yankees

10: Can’t blame him for trying to stay in the race.

    • I hear you about the “don’t get on the case of young people.” The Greatest Generation is not conducting itself very well these days, being very homophobic and easily misled about health-care reform (the percentage of seniors who didn’t understand that Medicare was a government run health insurance was *astounding*).

Forget the kids. Rag on grand dad and grandma! ;-)
