Withers: Former child actor goes after Darwin

This is getting silly. And sad. Put a microphone under the mouth of a conservative and he/she will spout out theories that can’t even pass the smell test. From porno equaling gay and same sex marriage being a talking point for the socialist revolution, conservatives have harangued us for the past few days. Well let’s end the week with a former child actor going a few rounds with Charles Darwin.
Kirk Cameron, whose last decent project was Growing Pains (and the show wasn’t all that), is taking on Darwin’s The Origin of Species. According to Cameron the book is the reason why so many people are atheists and he isn’t about to let that influence continue.
“Atheism has been on the rise for years now, and the Bible of the atheists is ‘The Origin of Species,’” Cameron said. “We have a situation in our country where young people are entering college with a belief in God and exiting with that faith being stripped and shredded. What we want to do is have students make an informed, educated decision before they chuck their faith.”
Cameron should be a little bit more honest, but I assume as a no talent hack veracity isn’t a strength. The “educated decision” of college students is not his care. He would rather everyone pray to his God. Makes life a whole lot easier.
As for atheism being on the rise, it is of course more complicated than that, but why would Cameron feel a need to go into details? They always frustrate the crazy.

James, great piece, thanks for pointing it out. I’m sure I’ll see it on an atheist website.
To all those poised to type “how is this a gay story” I’ll answer: this delusional belief system is used to discriminate against us so we must be aware of the enemy, how stupid they are, and be prepared to fight this rhetoric.
The most ridiculous: “What we want to do is have students make an informed, educated decision before they chuck their faith.”
that is exactly what they are doing! Anyone who thinks about this and keeps their faith did not make and informed educated decision.
by definition you need faith to keep your faith. Facts and reason must be ignored as they do not square with the cult’s fairy tales.
As to atheism rising I follow the Pew’s research and yes, James, the answer is not clear. I believe you refer to the “nones” which Pew is being careful, and accurate, saying they are not necessarily non believers.
I agree…not necessarily, but given the fear of fire and brimstone beaten into humans since birth, it is more likely they find it easier to be unafiliated before they finally are able to admit atheism.
Sound familiar, former closet dwellers that most of us are?
Please… like Cameron hasn’t played the skin flute a time or two. Why else would he be trying so hard to the opposite, still. Hollywood is supposed to be behind us (prone) like Cameron most likely enjoys.
I say let him keep talking, the idiocy he puts out tends to marginalize him far more than it ever affects those who actually know how to think for themselves instead of relying upon mythology.
Just bring up zircon or archeopteryx. These are just 2 examples of all the scientific terminology (and evidence) one really needs to show why religion is wrong about creation.
For those who dont know:
Zircon is a mineral found in nearly every rock on earth and lets scientists date some regions to billions of years ago.
Archeopteryx was the first known dinosaur fossil with feathers, logically indicating where modern birds descended from. Numerous sub-species are now known as well.
Not really a reason to be atheist I suppose, but its rather callous of someone to single out a group like that and indicate that they’re a growing problem. (wink)
Kirk Cameron is a moron.
He needs to get a life.
What he doesn’t realize is that the real reason that atheism is on the rise is that people are being hurt or offended by the policies and actions of the religious right and so end up leaving. Unfortunately the public face of Christianity for the last few decades has been the religious right with their fire & brimstone hate mongering. This is why people are leaving and is particularly true with young adults & teens. The people of my generation have grown up with this, we see it nearly every day and when something happens that confirms what we see in the media we decide to leave religion instead of finding a nicer faith. It very well could have happened to me, and almost did except for the fact that by the point when my faith was wavering I had been introduced to a faith that was an antidote to the things I had been seeing and a perfect fit for who I was becoming. I went from being a Catholic to a Unitarian Universalist -the most progressive mainline denomination out there, we ordained gays & lesbians in 1970. So really he’s the reason why atheism is on the rise, the right has caused a problem & is now blaming others for their mistakes yet again.
DaveW I have to say I am rather sad about your posting. While our dear sweet moron from Growing Pains is far off the deep end when it comes to religion so are you, just in the opposite direction. The comment that anyone who takes the time to thoughtfully consider things and remains a person of faith didn’t consider anything betrays you as a one size fits all believer. You don’t “not believe”, you believe there is nothing, just like all the other atheists. And as with Christians who think that their way is the only right way you frustrate me for exactly the same reason. You are indeed just like them.
What I find even funnier is that people like him tend to call followers of a Pagan religion to either be godless or Satanists. Which we are neither. Most Pagans worship at the very least two gods (The Lady and The Lord). There isn’t any devil in the Pagan religion. Satanists would usually have to admit to the monotheist (Abrahamic) version of only a singular male god in some way. The Pagans are also growing in size also. Epically when people read that fantasy book called the bible. No offense to those that believe in it as long as they themselves don’t put down other peoples beliefs. These are the two places that people are going to when they usually leave christianity. Bright Blessings To Everybody
LOL. He’s gonna be a younger version of tom cruise…
For those who still hold on to some kind of religion I suggest reading the Evolution of God by Robert Wright. It should be read with an open mind and that could be a real challenge for some.
So, he’s taking on Darwin’s Theory of Evolution? the Origin of Species was written almost 150 years ago and the theory is quite significantly different today than it was then – that’s what science is (not this “intelligent design” bullshit.)
I just hope he and Ray Comfort continue to use the famous banana example.
I saw the video they created about this on YouTube somewhere. It’s really difficult for me to believe that people can take him seriously after the banana thing a couple of years ago. These two are NOT scientists yet they insist on pretending they are. This would be laughable if they weren’t so over the top.
Facebook user, not sure you are the same one but we’ve had this exchange before.
You make an error in logic. You say my “non belief” is a belief that there is nothing so it is just like relgious faith (I’m paraphrasing).
The error you make is in ignoring the vast difference between these two so-called faiths.
Faith in god requires suspension of disbelief (to steal a literary term). Faith in god only comes from one thing…faith in god. It does not come from observation, science or facts. In fact to maintain your faith you have to actively reject facts that are in front of your face every day.
Not believing is believing there is no god (not “nothing” as you say..who knows what we’ll discover….intelligent life that is altering events here for example). That truth is realized by observing what is claimed by religion and realizing that it can’t possibly be true.
You say I’m off the other deep end because, with what respect I can muster, it offends your faith and is something you must reject in order to maintain sanity.
To say I’m the same just on opposite ends of the spectrum shows you don’t understand what is meant by observation of facts and the world around us. Religious people do not come to their faith that way. I come to my non-belief that way, so it is quite different.
My original statement that you can’t observe facts and still be religious stands.
You have to reject facts to buy this line of b.s. Or like many people I know you maintain some shred that it might be true even though the facts are agains this (most of these people are Deists, however, not christians).
Sorry I made you sad. I know why, losing your faith probably is sad, but what I’ve said clearly is a challenge to yours and I urge you to follow that path.
So what i’m getting from Kirk Camerons quote is that students enter college and come out smarter. Whats his issue lol?
