Last week I was listening to a WNYC program called The Take Away. The show’s political director Andrea Bernstein spent time in Pennsylvania’s Luzerne County and came across voters, Democrats, who were up front on why Barack Obama had no chance at their votes.
“I really don’t want a black man in the White House. They have taken over,” said a voter who didn’t want to divulge her name (wonder why!).
The views voters were willing to share with Bernstein seem to be mirrored by a AP-Yahoo News poll that pointed out Obama’s “racial troubles.”
“The poll suggests that the percentage of voters who may turn away from Obama because of his race could easily be larger than the final difference between the candidates in 2004 — about 2.5 percentage points.”
Team Obama isn’t asking me for advice (they don’t even respond with interview requests but why be bitter?), but Obama is served best by steering clear from this topic. If asked, question the poll’s methodology and findings. Point out that this election is going to be decided on people’s dreams, not fears. Say something about the large crowds that come out to rallies in states with low minority population. Lastly remind the Obama campaign got its lift off in Iowa not Detroit.
When it comes to race talk, Obama loses by default so it’s best not to even engage it explicitly.
Of course they will, for the most part – while a lot of white democrats (and republicans) are at least a little racist, most white democrats aren’t racist enough to vote contrary to their own politics because of the race of a candidate.
Bud, Sherman is right… yes most Democrats are socialist and they don’t even know it. I have even read texts of Obama’s speeches that come right out of Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto! I am not lying nor am I exaggerating either. He has paraphrased Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels when describing what he wants to do. If you get out and read your translated copy of the communist manifesto you will see for yourself. But first you to admit to yourself the possibility is there that Obama is a socialist. If you do not even admit to the possibility then you will never even research for yourself to find out. To quote the hippies “question authority” and extrapolate that to your own belief system as well.
BTW McCarthy was looking from communist not socialist. But in practice there really is not much difference between the two.
Please don’t assume that I am a McCain supporter either because I am not. I personally believe the Republican party is socialist light they (R) are a big government anti freedom party much like the Dems.
Tanner, Your comment is such a racist comment in and of its self. Is it true there are racist in the Democratic party, Yes… with out a doubt but by no means are all white dems racist. To make such a blanket statement about a race of people is racist with out a doubt.
I do find it Ironic how many are saying Obama will not win the general election because of his race; when it was his race that got him the Dem spot. I agree it was not only his race but for many people it was the deciding factor to vote for him.
Will white democrats vote for Obama? NO. Because democrats are still racist….
ShermanStreet: you wouldn’t know a Socialist if he walked up to you and offered you head. “Socialist” was what McCarthy used to scare people in the 1950s.Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose (look it up; I doubt you learned it or much of anything else in school).
