Withers: Poll shows opposition to marriage ban is up
It has been a good 24 hours for same sex marriage advocates in California. Yesterday it was announced actor Brad Pitt donated $100,000 to “No on 8 ” the organization that is fighting to defeat Proposition 8, the proposed gay marriage ban that will appear on California’s November ballot.
Looks like the “No on 8″ is doing good work because according to a new poll 55 percent oppose the proposition.
The New Field Poll shows that a majority of the voters likely to fill out a ballot are against the same sex-marriage ban; 38 percent are for it, while 7 percent are still sitting on the fence.
In July when asked the same question, only 51 percent wanted to nix the ban while 42 percent were ready to block the door for gay and lesbian couples.
If Field Poll director Mark DiCamillo is to be believed there is no reason not to think these numbers will uphold come Novemember.
“Voters have a pretty firm opinion on same-sex marriage, no matter how you describe it,” DiCamillo said. “I don’t expect big differences in polls over time.”
While the numbers point in a direction that makes same-sex advocates happy, “Yes on 8″ spokeswoman Jennifer Kerns throws in a rather healthy, and biting, dose of reality.
“People, when called by a pollster, tend to be more politically correct when talking to another human being than when they step into the voting booth and vote their conscience,” Kerns said.
So keep those champagne bottles on ice until the votes are counted.

Is she the same family as Sally Kern? I think there is an extra s..wonder what that stands for?
No on 8 should take her quote and use it in an ad…people say they aren’t bigots but really are. The ad could ask who are you, really? A bigot, someone who pretends not to be, or a human being.
I think big problem is the real bigots have made up their mind, and they may be in that 55%.
someone else said they’d like to vote to outlaw her religion. You can, sord of…call, write, email your representative, right a letter to the editor, join FFRF or AU.
I write so many letters, was recently introduced at a party, someone said, oh yes, you, the atheist!…I was very popular at the party..more people reject religion than admit it, just like more people reject us than admit it. We need to work on these issues as a community since religion is the one thing driving hatred of us…and people are giving it up.
Write. speak. do something. We must end religion, it is destroying our race.
Please remember to vote NO on Prop 8 on November 4 and ask your friends and family to do the same. Spread the message online too.

As long as we voting our consciences. My conscience tells me to vote to outlaw Jennifer Kerns’s religion
“People, when called by a pollster, tend to be more politically correct when talking to another human being than when they step into the voting booth and vote their conscience,” Kerns said.
If that’s the case, then it goes to show how bad this amendment is if people can’t even be honest about supporting it according to its proponents.
I think the comment made by the ‘Yes on 8′ spokeswoman is very telling. She said “when talking to another human being” people tend to not admit they will vote for discrimination. She used the term “politically correct”, but I think there has to be an ounce of shame mixed in there. In the voting booth maybe they can better pretend this isn’t about keeping a group as second class citizens and more about this sanctity b.s.
Barack Obama may be half a loaf, but John McCain is a stone and a serpent. The biggest mistake gay people can make is the one made by Log Cabin Republicans … no, your portfolio ISN’T more important than your human rights. Yes, you DO have to take responsibility for your less fortunate brothers and sisters, through FAIR taxation of those who can AFFORD it. If you MUST commit political suicide by voting for the McCain-Palin ticket, at LEAST have the DECENCY to vote AGAINST Prop. 8 before you do.

Never underestimate your opponent. Just ask Hillary
I expect the amendment to pass, as polls tend to over-estimate our side. The opposition to same-sex marriage is rooted in a visceral hatred of gay people. That doesn’t just go away in an election cycle, and it is a big motivator for them to go vote against us. In fact, here in Canada, I also expect that if the Conservatives are elected to a majority government (our elections are also this fall) that starting to roll back same-sex marriage will be among the things on their agenda. They’ve said nothing about it during the campaign, but the people who support them have, and expect them to do it.
It’s true that things COULD be different on voting day, but I have a feeling that it’ll get rejected, and I don’t think that’s just wishful thinking.
The news is good but look at the sample size of the poll, about 800 people. There are a lot more than 800 people voting on this.
And remember people, Obama has come out publicly opposing this hateful initiative. And MaCain, pandering again to right wing religious conservatives, is on the record publicly supporting this heatful initiative.
Don’t get complacent. There is still a high chance that it will fail; we have to get out and vote on election day and cannot allow low voter turnout enable this discriminatory amendment pass. The worst thing that could happen is our getting our guard down. Never give in! Never forget the stakes!
