Withers: Ten random thoughts

1. Looks like Atlanta has a thing against gay bars (Memphis also!) We’ll stay on top of these stories for you–thanks to Trace for pushing us to do something about Atlanta. What do our readers in those two cities have to say?
2. The Democrats are hyperventilating about Joe Wilson’s inability to act like an adult when the president is speaking. He’s apologized, President Obama has accepted his apology. Calls for censure are a bit much.
3. If you call Obama a socialist, communist, fascist, Kenyan, Hitler, and/or Stalin you need to keep the tin foil hat on and sit in the corner.
4. Any Graham Swift fans out there? His new book is worth looking at.
5. A gay black gospel singer?!?! Clutch those pearls! On the serious side, it will be interesting to see how gospel music fans react to his admission.
6. Loved, as in completely, Serena Williams’ meltdown in the US Open! I’m a cheerleader for that type of foolishness.
7. Last Joe Wilson comment: did you hear him go on about his “relationship” with Michelle Obama’s family? Looks like the Wilson clan and the Robinson brood live in neighboring South Carolina towns. How that counts for a relationship is beyond me.
8. Anyone shocked that Barney Frank is not part of the push to repeal DOMA?
9. Kayne West should put the vodka down.
10. A whiff of Cafe Bustelo brewing makes me think all is right in the world.

On a side note. Thanks for the shout out James. Always found you to be a man of your word and you followed through.
Glad that you gave props for the situation that is still going down in Atlanta.
Sorry that the rest at 365gay don’t think that the subject even deserves a headline. After all, why would it be important that 9 undercover officers and 13 uniformed officer detained 62 patrons and arrested 8 on charges that are expected to be dropped. Why would it be important to note that the Gay & Lesbian Liaison on the police force was not notified of the raid until afterward. Why is it important that 9 formal complaints have been filed and that investigations are starting.
Barney still has time to get his name on there! (I’m holding out for him.)
I’m calling you out on #2 and #6 and I’m sorry, James, this may sting a little… Re: Serena: “I’m a cheerleader for that type of foolishness.” So, too, are Joe Wilson’s fans. They’re going to act like fools as long as someone encourages it, which is what we’re doing when if we don’t discourage them by punishing them for their bad behavior.
Atlanta is one of the most inclusive and welcoming cities in the entire country. We have achieved (for the most part) a community in which all sexes, races, nationalities and sexualities get along. Though, we do have some in the city that are not happy about everyone being a cohesive family and would rather see divisions established and maintained.
Gays turned Midtown Atlanta around when it was a blight upon the city. They brought in businesses, entertainment and rehabilitated housing. Now that the work is done, some of the laziest and biggoted want the area and property for themselves. This raid is about one thing … not wanting a legitimate gay establishment to exist in their area. Peggy Denby has harassed gay establishments and straight bars for years. Her group was instrumental in ensuring that Backstreet was closed and has harassed people at Bulldogs (a predominantly black gay bar) for some time.
The city has come together to ensure that this issue is addressed.
