Withers: Palin brings it
The crowd at the Republican Convention last night was primed and pumped. After being yelled at by Mitt Romney (is anyone going to miss this guy?), told a few jokes by Mike Huckabee and ego stroked by good ol’ Rudy Giuliani, the Republican faithful were ready to be wowed. And Sarah Palin did not disappoint.
The self-described hockey mom (give her props for her joke about the difference between hockey mothers and pit-bulls), gave a perfect pitch speech last night. She introduced herself, her family, politics, and relished her role as attack dog. And attack she did.
“I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities,” Palin said bringing the crowd to its feet.
Her speech was filled with these little digs, all delivered with a smile; the happy warrior stance Republicans love.
The only false note was how much the speech was about her. Sure there were the obligatory nods to the guy who took her from Alaska, John McCain, but the speech had a presidential nominee feel. Sure Republicans are in the glow of their Palin love, but McCain is on the top of the ticket.
The bottom line is this: Democrats be scared because Palin is going to be a formidable opponent.

“Palin brings it”???
Mr. Withers, check your keyboard. It seems the “s” and the “h” keys aren’t working properly.
Jenn, although I would dearly have loved to have seen an Obama/Clinton ticket, it would have been way too liberal (for America, anyway) to ever have a hope in Hade of winning the White House. I’m not sure how or why you see Mrs Palin as “charming”.
If Obama wasn’t so stubborn, he could have ran with Hillary and had a sure win…now, he’s barely a blip on the radar. I may disagree with her politics, but she’s charming, witty, and likeable.
It will be tough for Obama to do anything to this lady. She has about the same experience he does…only his lack of experience is at the top of the ticket, she’s charming and evasive as he is, and he can’t well criticize if women vote for her for her gender – because many blacks are voting for his race. It’s a weird position.
I think the McCain/Palin ticket is just as likely to win…which is alarming given that their party has basically ruined our economy and world standing in 8 years.
Palin is obviously a very disturbed individual. For someone to say that they “like her” is just a sad reflection on their judgment.
As a Democrat the only thing that scares me about these Repubs is the fact that if they get elected and McBush dies, this woman will be in charge. THAT IS SCARY!
Agreed again (and thank you as well) John,
… and indeed, though I do like Mrs. Palin (a lot), I moreso think/believe that the country desparately needs a democrat in the oval office.
T.
Why thank you Tom. Although I will solidly vote for Senator Obama, my first choice for President was Senator Clinton. Because they are so close on all the major policy issues, Senator Obama is now the best positioned candidate to the lead us out of our current troubles. I certainly do not want 4 more years of the same. We are a kind and generous community who cares for our ill as the early AIDS crisis demonstrated, and we deserve better than McCain.
In Alaska!
Help! Help!
I am being held captive in a Republican-owned Chinese Fortune Cookie Factory.
Good point John. Mr. McCain could have chosen her simply in the spirit of (a kinda) reverse-sexism [and reverse-sexism is still [as you aptly (pre-supposedly) penned indeed) sexism John].
I find it very funny that when I saw Palin on the news this morning…i had to look close at the TV to make sure it was her. The Republicans really made her look homely (that hair just wasn’t her)and unpowerful. they made her look like she was a homely christian women who was following her grandfather to church. I didn’t listen to it because she would just make me angry thinking that she was just up there for the show (but then arint we all..hahaha)hey that was a joke…don’t take me to federal prison, I’ll be someone’s toy boy or will the secret service want me to bend over for them because we all know that within the Republican party there are many of them bending over and for each other. oh jesus they are taken me away…no no no no I don’t want to go to prison…no no no no oh well i guess I don’t have a choice since bush put into place he can spy on my computer anytime they want, there goes Democracy and our FREEDOM!
Hey Tom, being crtitcal of a woman candidate because she has little experience to qualify her to hold the highest office in the country (should McCain kick the bucket) is not sexist. If that were true, one could never be critical of a woman candidate, period. Judging a female candidate on different standards than a male candidate is sexist, and nobody did that here. McCain chose Palin largely bacause she is a woman, who would appeal to the religiously conservative Republican base. She certainly is less qualified than McCain’s other main finalists like Lieberman and Ridge. So was McCain being sexist by choosing a woman, not because of her extensive resume and vast experience, but rather simply because she is a ultra conservative woman?
Some of you missed the point.
Palin did “bring it” but she wasn’t trying to bring it to you or me. She was preaching to the choir. She was talking to the believers. The republican base.
She didn’t expect you or me to convert.
Watch “Men in Trees” to get the flavor of Alaska. Also, look at PerezHilton website to see a great video clip of the John Stewart show. You won’t be dissapointed.
… (and) gay male sexism rears its ugly head once more. True: Obama mentioned “gays and lesbians” as he calls us, in *his* acceptance speech but “anyone with ears” could hear how he stumbled over the phrase. Now if you can just get your elitist heads out of the sand for just a moment ?? … There are, nonetheless, very good reasons for having a democrat in the white House [reasons of social justice for the unfortunate and aid to those who've fallen through the cracks]. IF you are voting for the Democrats solely because you somehow believe that you ‘deserve’ to “marry your [fill in the blank]” then not only is your head in the clouds, but your hearts are of darkness.
I thought Reagan was a bad president, and I was right; he scared me big time; they wanted to take down the middle class and pretend they would trickle down some money to the general public. Then it got worse; they elected Daddy Bush, and he made the deficit even worse, the biggest in history to date, and his CIA spies came out of their closet. I found it hard to believe we could get any worse, and then the stupid electorate of the US brought in Sonny W. Bush, a real religious nut case, who took us to an unnecessary and horribly expensive war and made Daddy Bush’s deficit look like a small pay day loan. They took all our money and told us to go shopping while they fleeced us with bad mortgages, making the S&L crisis of the Reagan and Daddy Bush days look like a small credit card debt.
Now they haul out this shrill witch and a gun-totin’ old fart with a BIG chip on his shoulder over his Viet Nam torture. Those Elephants are even worse when I thought things could get no worse, and we have McSame and his Bitch breathing down our necks. If these two nut cases get elected, I am ready for the Revolution. Call me the day after the election and let’s get started if we do not elect some kinder gentler type person. Please deliver me forever from such Republican stupidity and evil as they have rolled out this time. Surely the people of the US cannot be bamboozled this time, but I think of the past and they frighten me even more than ever. Whew! I suddenly feel the heat from their fire-breathing mouths. No wonder she was in Alaska; perhaps SHE IS the reason for global warming.
