Withers: Palin brings it
The crowd at the Republican Convention last night was primed and pumped. After being yelled at by Mitt Romney (is anyone going to miss this guy?), told a few jokes by Mike Huckabee and ego stroked by good ol’ Rudy Giuliani, the Republican faithful were ready to be wowed. And Sarah Palin did not disappoint.
The self-described hockey mom (give her props for her joke about the difference between hockey mothers and pit-bulls), gave a perfect pitch speech last night. She introduced herself, her family, politics, and relished her role as attack dog. And attack she did.
“I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities,” Palin said bringing the crowd to its feet.
Her speech was filled with these little digs, all delivered with a smile; the happy warrior stance Republicans love.
The only false note was how much the speech was about her. Sure there were the obligatory nods to the guy who took her from Alaska, John McCain, but the speech had a presidential nominee feel. Sure Republicans are in the glow of their Palin love, but McCain is on the top of the ticket.
The bottom line is this: Democrats be scared because Palin is going to be a formidable opponent.

Gee Trace, I did not realize that healthcare for all, or non-discrimination in employment for all, or fighting global warming for all are changes that we don’t need. We do know they are changes that will be championed by an Obama/Biden ticket and changes completely rejected by a McCain/Palin ticket.
Hillary is a brilliant senator from NY who would have made an excellent President. She has vigorously endorsed Obama, and must be preplexed that such an average Jane (rather than say an accomplished Condoleza Rice or Senator Snow of Maine) was chosen as the Republican VP standard bearer. It just goes to show you how far McCain had to stoop to choose a candidate that would be enbraced by the wacky religious right.
As for the country doing well and getting better, no wonder you support McCain. You and Carl Rove feel exactly the same way despite a slumping stock market, record breaking fereral budget deficits, increasing inflation, a mortgage meltdown in the sub-prime markets, declining home values, increasing medical costs, and a nation of 50,000,000 uninsured. Sure we are doing better Trace. Keep sippin at that sherry.
Michael, are you talking about the same Hillary that the Democratic party passed on having even as a VP Candidate?
And as it is looking like a real chance that McCain/Palin will win this election; Palin will certainly smash the glass ceiling at that point.
As for things getting bad, I’m not certain what country you live in. It’s pretty good where I am and getting better every day. I would venture to say that every member of my friends and family would say the same. Does the country need some tweeking? Certainly it does. But it does not need more government and more taxes.
Now I don’t think anyone really has an idea of what Obama stands for. But, we do know that Obama stands for bigger government and more taxes. If that’s the “Change” that he is talking about, it’s “Change” that we don’t need.
Trace, you are so wrong – we aren’t in a meltdown, we are angry. Angry and the lies, hypocrisy, decite. Angry that there are people so incredibly stupid to support a McCain/Palin ticket. Angry that our country has been deteriorated over the past 8 years and McCain/Palin would do even more damage.
What does this election have to do with her being bright or a woman? She didn’t carve the way for women – you can thank the likes of people like HIllary for that. Certainly not Palin – what glass ceiling did she break?
But more to the point – this election is about AMERICA and how bad it has gotten and how much it needs to change. So if you love your country and want to see us be best we can and should be – then you have no choice but to vote for the only ticket that even has a plausible chance of bringing that change about and that is Obama/Biden.
Thanks Mark for answering my question. It is funny to see so many McCain/Palin supporters on here, yet just like at the RNC, they lack substance. They will only further divide a country that is on the brink of breaking. I asked for one piece of evidence as to what they will do to make life better for us – and I am not asking it to even be gaycentric, and do they respond? NO. Because they can’t.
WOW, the Democratic Wing is in full and complete melt down. It’s amazing that ya’ll are so frightened and scared of Sarah Palin.
Yeah, she’s a bright and professional woman who happens to be a Republican.
I can guarantee you one thing, that language such as is in these posts is going to drive more of middle America towards McCain than you can possibly immagine.
Keep these tactics up and you’ll lose this election for Obama before the first debate.
Oh yeah Steve, that’s the cure – more guns on the street, more domestic drilling, more nuclear power plants. Oh and that fictitious strong economy you naively think that a Republican will bring – well, that hasn’t existed since – well, a DEMOCRAT was in office. As for your remarks regarding the military those are conveniently and self-servingly untrue. But you seem to be good at feeding yourself misinformation but also very poor solutions – so I guess you DO have the correct party chosen. Go – vote Republican. Maybe they’ll let you wear a pink traingle in the process – heck, maybe they’ll let you turn on the ovens too – they’d probably want to use coal and I’m sure you’d approve of that as well! Oh well, some people, you give them a shovel and they bury themselves.
Hillary supporters, and all thinking people, must be aghast that such an average Jane could be considered a heartbeat away from the Presidency. I used to think no one stupider than George Bush could ever be a US President. Sarah Palin has proved me wrong. Let’s all go and shoot some moose!
I think she is just what the republican party needs at this time. I cant wait to cast my vote for her.
I truly believe in less gun control and more domestic drilling as well as building more nuclear power plants in this country.
I realize that as a gay man that she is opposed to my civil rights and I am working to try and educate my community and the rest of the republican party about this issue. It boils down ,for me personally, that I would rather have a strong economy, and much better border security than vote for someone thats going to tax me into an early grave and then tell me I’m wrong because I believe that everyone should work.
I don’t let the fact that I sleep with men be the only deciding factor when I make such an important decsion such as how I cast my vote.
One last reason I will never trust or vote for Osama. Any man that refuses to stand for the pledge of allegiance or show any type of empathy for our nations service members has no business being their commander in chief.
Granny Clampett was a pittbull too.
Hey James – your RIGHT! Palin has brought it “in”! According to the DrudgeReport just now – she has brough in over $8 million for Obama since she spoke from over 130,000 people and they hope to hit $10 Million by the time McSame gets to speak tonight! Not the bringing “it in” you referenced – but hey, this unstable whacko is helping to raise some serious cash – for OBAMA!
What a slanted article! I didn’t expect to read such an ignorant contribution on this site. BOOO!
She used sympathy/empathy to get your vote/heart. Using her handicapped child for votes, bad karma. She reminded me of Anita Bryant. Her daughter Bristol standing there with her boyfriend, like it’s ok to be 17 & pregnant. He looked like “Get me the @#$% out of here” Sorry, small town baloney
Sorry, Michael. I can’t think of anything.
If she were from my neck of the woods, she’d be called a wet-behind-the-ears redneck, straight off the farm. I think Alaska, with their moose stew and aerial hunting, is sort of a northern version of the same small-town attitudes. She didn’t even have a passport until recently, and then only because it became required to enter and return from Canada. She is so far out of her depth it’s not funny. Well, it is, sort of. She’s been hidden away (studying with party leaders and experts, they say) and I suspect we’ll see a lot more of that. I doubt they will expose her to audiences other than the most ardent republican crowds. We’ll see one shot at her, during the one veep debate. She’s not ready for prime time, lest Rove’s buddies write the speech for her.
Yes I watched her and Giuliani also. They were both full of attacks. I found it appalling that her youngest child with downs syndrome was singled out. She even mentioned that when she is the vice president of this great country, she will see to it that families with specials needs children like her own will have the help they need. What about all the families with children that stem cell research could help. Helping them is against their moral beliefs, children of a lesser god so to speak. After we were all informed that we should leave the candidates children and their problems out of the spotlight. I feel that all families, regardless of what religion or what the special need, should have access to the resources needed to make life possible or better for that child and family. To single out that particular need was like a slap in the face to people with other problems. Big business, big money, and guns are the motive behind McCain picking her and she is going to play the game of course. She and Giuliani have helped me make up my mind who I am NOT going to vote for. I say NO to another 4 years of Bush tactics. I want my America back.
