Withers: Mary Cheney donates cash to anti-gay pol

Have nothing against  gays and lesbians who swing right. Sure we disagree on policies, but the gay tent is big enough for those who squeal with delight every time Ronald Reagan’s name is mentioned.

However, there are moments when gay Republicans can be their worst enemies. Take Mary Cheney. Daughter of a former vice president whose vision of torture is spooky, Ms. Cheney is partnered and a mom. This unnerves a few on the right. Remember the kooky Alan Keyes going after her (dear Keyes acolytes: you all are fools)? She and her dad are both pro gay marriage, but they are also team players and kept that on the hush-hush when the leader of their party was trying to get anti-gay marriage lines in the Constitution.

Pro- gay family under the Republican rubric? What’s not to love? So why did she donate cash to a pol who voted for a Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and wanted to bar  gay adoption in Washington, DC?

Cheney gave 1000 bucks to Rob Portman who wants to be Ohio’s senator in 2012. The Republican candidate used to work in the George W. Bush White House and served in the House of Representatives between 1993 and 2005.

Like her dad,  Cheney more than likely won’t feel a need to explain and will want to deprive the civil liberties of anyone who has the nerve to question her.

    • Every american gives money to anti-gay sources, through the taxes you pay your president. Not to mention we are all funding a war, whether we like it or not. Withers always picking on any female.

    • Another way of looking at this may be to see the hypocrisy of the right and the Republican Party in particular. I would bet this guy does not care one bit about gay right issues. However he knows based on the time period when he went in to politics, that if he had any chance of winning any elective office with the right wing bigots in control of the Republican Party he has to be against marriage equality and any other equality issue for that matter.

    • Did she do it, or did her daddy do it in her name?

    • This is what I don’t get with gay Republicans. They say they’re not single issues voters which is fine. But when that single issue pertains to who you are and your pursuit of a happy and dignified life, how can you vote for someone who is against this. Quite puzzling!

    • The entire Cheney family are just very selfish. They look out for their best interests. Mary being a Lesbian matters not one bit to them. First and foremost what is important is their family, then their money. They don’t care about the young gay kids being beaten at school, or the middle class lesbian who just lost her partner to cancer and her house to taxes. She does not represent the gay community nor does she in any way benefit us and we need to just write her off and let her live. I feel very sorry for Heather Poe. Just imagine being her should she ever decide to end that relationship. She will have the entire Cheney family to deal with and will never see her son again.

    • This is no different than saying, “I don’t condone speeding” to your kids and then getting behind the wheel and speeding. Talk about a forked tongue!

    • Why? Because she’s a good Republican, and, by default, you support the Republican candidate. I’m assuming there’s also a bunch of rhetoric around “I like his Republican values, but I disagree with him on this one issue and will work to defeat him on that front” or “his position is evolving” or “I’m trying to affect chance from within the party.”

Free market and “pull yourself up by the bootstraps” principles trump almost anything. You have to be quite a lunatic fringe Republican not to get the support of mainstream Republicans.

You could argue with her that the gay agenda would move ahead much quicker if she would withdraw all support from any candidate who does not support gay rights. But that’s not her priority.

    • Self loathing sheep of daddy’s wayward flock.

She has no business raising a child. That poor kid will be in therapy before high school.

    • A friend said last night that Bush was stupid and Cheney was evil.

Seems very much a case of “like father, like daughter”. Looks like he has well-schooled her in his ways and that she has already long since become a “female copy of Daddy Cheney” in behavior and political motivation.

    • I guess when you’re well-connected and have enough money, you don’t need legal protections. Daddy and his cronies will make sure if anything goes afoul in your life, he’ll/they’ll make it disappear.
