Withers: Democratic Convention, Day 3
Sure Barack Obama lost the word presumptive and now is just a nominee, and Hilary Clinton’s call from the floor to make it all official was picture perfect political theater. And no one would be talking out of turn to point to Joe Biden’s time on the stage as well spent (say what you will about the man, his personal history is going play extremely well on the stump); however, last night belonged to the guy who hails from Hope. Arkansas.
No need to lie. I wasn’t expecting much of President Bill Clinton’s speech. I was convinced his anger at Team Obama and Hilary’s loss would seep into his speech. Sure he would support Obama but he would leave enough space to let the world know that this guy from Illinois is not his guy.
But like Hilary the night before, Bill left no doubt of his support and he did it in the way only Bill can. The smile, finger wagging, looks of surprise at Republican talking points were on display.
“Think about it: more tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans that will swell the deficit, increase inequality, and weaken the economy; more Band-Aids for health care that will enrich insurance companies, impoverish families, and increase the number of uninsured; more going it alone in the world, instead of building the shared responsibilities and shared opportunities necessary to advance our security and restore our influence.”
Clinton set the table for Obama’s speech tonight and if Obama is smart, the first thing he does is a long riff on the Clinton’s and their importance to the party.
And if he’s real smart, Obama, Biden, and Clinton do some speeches together. Do a few southern states (Bill’s backyard) together. Let the Big Dawg go after a few folk.
