Withers: Ten random thoughts

By James Withers, contributing editor, 365Gay Blog 08.24.2009 9:19am EDT

10-2-top

1. I’m behind the curve on this one, but I’m not getting the whole Twilight thing. But that’s good, no?

2. Any opinions on the couple, Aiyi-nah Ford and Torian Brown, that were kicked out of a diner for too much PDA? No fan of PDA but have you ever heard of a straight couple being asked to leave for holding each other?

3. For those convinced Henry Gates was arrogant and  got what he deserved, what do you say about this video? Did the woman get her comeuppance? Will you defend the police? Or wonder what this story has to do with a gay news site? Nothing at all. Nothing at all.

4. I have a new boyfriend. He just doesn’t know it  yet. That’s something I need to work on. None of my former boyfriends knew we were going out.

5. Anyone who throws a sex toy at an Adam Lambert concert is an idiot.

6. If you are going to go on a show and spread disinformation about death panels, at least have the decency to have the page marked.

7. I want to visit Buenos Aires, the city of Jorge Luis Borges.

8. Happy 100th birthday Lester Young.

9. Guess who is blogging now? Beau, baby? Why do you never call?

10. An unassisted triple play!? The Mets season is now officially  over. 2010 baby!

    • Proffessor Gates was asked for ID. provided it and it was unjustly rejected. Yes the officer was over zealous, and should have figured another way to get the identification validated.
The lady in the car did not follow the officers instructions until she took it too far and was arrested. Then she put herself in a position where the ablity to flee. Yes he had the right to pull her out of the vehicle. Her son being in the car is not relavant. She continued to resist and was warned. the first tazer was justified. The second maybe he should have given her a more direct and firm order that would have allowed her to be hand-cuffed with-out a second tazing. If she did not try to bully the officer in the beginning and asked pollitely it might have been resolved more peacefully.
Maybe police should use there guns more often to arrest people. Then the lighter use restrainsts would not be an issue.

    • @#2 This is definitely modern sexism. And it is definitely harassment based on a failure to understand people who are different. If this was a woman with her head leaned against her boyfriend’s chest no one would think twice about it. But since it’s a woman with her head against her girlfriend’s chest(One with breasts) it’s all of a sudden an x-rated sexual display. Straight people just need to see how it’s exactly like them, while looking differently to their own thoughts. I personally have seen several lesbian couples doing the same thing at the grocery store no one ran up to them and threw them out. It’s 2 AM for crying out loud it’s not 2 PM in the middle of a Chuck E Cheese with a bunch of kids running around. The night is suppose to be for lovers and I believe most people understand that. I hope they win their case.

    • 1. Could not care less about Twilight. It’s not even worth ridiculing. Too easy.

      2. I just watched this video for the first time. Personally, I did not see any lascivious behavior. I did see a couple expressing tenderness for each other the way dating couples (gay or straight) often do. I have to admit that sometimes (but not always) I get a little uncomfortable when a couple near me is acting this way, but I should also admit to having engaged in such PDAs myself more than a few times. Just recently I saw a straight couple make out lying down on a couch in public (during the day in a cafeteria lounge). They actually returned the same day for a few weeks to do the same. No one voiced a problem (though I know I was quietly irritated). They certainly were not asked to leave.

      3. Earlier in my life I helped teach self-defense to a city’s police force. They were great guys. Really, let me repeat, they were great guys. I had to stop after a scandal broke. A group of them chased down and beat someone with nightsticks. I saw them on the local news lying about the amount of damage a nightstick can cause and about the fact that they had cored their nightsticks and filled them with lead (illegal at the time). I’m not aware of any negative results for them. I just couldn’t contribute to behavior like that. I knew exactly how much damage and pain those nightsticks could inflict because I was teaching them how to maximize it. And I will repeat again, they were great guys. I think it’s important to note that it’s not just crazies that get caught up by the circumstances of the job.

      6. Was this not just one of the best political Stewart interviews to date? And then the next day she gets fired (asked to resign if I recall correctly). I actually believe that looking unprepared and silly by in part not having her props prepared (pages marked, talking points in order) contributed to her “resignation.”

      8. Happy birthday Mr. Young from a fan.

    • Concerning #3..Here’s a link to sort of understand why, cops have those “stay in the car” protocols.
      http://www.bittenandbound.com/2009/03/22/lovelle-mixon-oakland-police-shooter-kills-3-cops-photos-video/
And yes I’m still one of the people in the pro-Crowley crowd, because without knowing who Professor Gates was, for safety reasons, you would want to ask him to come outside.

But, in this case, I believe that tasing her was perhaps unneccessary, but if she’d simply have gone back in the car as instructed, instead of trying to go commando on the officer, then the outcome would’ve perhaps swayed.
