Withers: Anti-gay marriage foes don’t take the challenge

It was an easy set up. Chicago Tribune columnist Steve Chapman contacted thinkers and writers who have penned a lot of words on the ills of gay marriage and asked them to make predictions of what social problems will happen in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire now that those states have marriage rights.
You would think that given an opportunity to warn of the apocalypse would have these folk jump at the chance, but alas heavy hitters like Maggie Gallagher and Stanley Kurtz demurred. I’m surprised at Kurtz and will give him a pass. He is the only marriage rights foe I can think of who does not come from the topic with anti-gay animus.
David Blankenhorn, president of the Institute for American Values and author of “The Future of Marriage,” nibbled at the bait, but declined to give any specific predictions.
“I disagree with those who say it will have no impact at all,” Blankenhorn said. “But beyond that, I don’t think you can say.”
Proclaim same sex marriage will destroy the country but you can’t tell me how. Riiiiiight.
Those in favor of marriage rights played along.
M. V. Lee Badgett, an economist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and author of “When Gay People Get Married: What Happens When Societies Legalize Same-Sex Marriage,” made this observation: “In Europe, there’s no evidence that patterns have changed for marriage, divorce or non-marital births because of same-sex marriage or registered partnerships.”
I’m disappointed in the anti-gay marriage team. You would think after Chapman put down the gauntlet, they would have swung for the fences.
And you wonder why we are winning the debate.
Post-script: this really shouldn’t be added but Gallagher did respond with some weak mess. Come on gurl. You can do better than people who don’t like same sex marriage will feel uncomfortable.

They don’t want to answer because they are cowardly hypocrites, but we knew that anyway. Reminds me of when Pat Robertson said God was going to “call him home” if he didn’t get some outrageous $$$ donation. I wish he HAD been right. I guess doesn’t want that nasty old bigot either.
I love it. These people make all of these “End of the World” predictions and won’t respond as to how it will happen. What comes to mind is “kill them all and let god sort them out”. Maybe that is how it is suppose to end… by letting god sort it all out when we die and not the actual end of the world.
The didn’t answer because they know that any concrete scenario they come up with will not be as scary as the sheer lunacy that is feeding the nightmares of their fans, and they’d start to lose support. They don’t want to lose that advantage.
People like this only speak of gloom and doom so long as it remains as only theory and speculation. If they are pressed into giving some kind of an answer, they will inevitably err on the side of caution, meaning they will give a very vague thought. This is so that they won’t get caught having told a major lie. Could this be their one last chance at actually being a true follower of Christ?

Rev. Draigh Lunara
She is rediculous.
Read her responses to which she only came up with 4 or 5. Insane. Str8’s will “feel punished”? are you kidding me. I wish this stuff made MSNBC on TV. Are we really having such a hard time fighting THIS? I can’t believe this is the best a president of a H8 group can come up with. I wish I had known about Gallaghers “Traditional Marriage” B.S. that was happening in RI this last weekend. I for sure would have been infront of that entrance with my boyfriend and would have demonstrated our own Kiss-IN.
These people just get me soooo friggin angry. UGH!
Dr. Peter Venkman of Ghost Busters: Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together… mass hysteria!
I actually find this result quite shocking and surprising.
Such people generally appear to have no compunctions about claiming they were right later regardless of what they previously said. I’m surprised many didn’t step up to the plate just for the free press.
The fear mongers and haters of same-sex marriage have no argument. They can no longer us the predictable mantras, ergo brothers marrying sisters, parents marrying their children, polygamy, marrying one’s pet because nothing of the kind has happened in the seven countries where SSM is legal. Armageddon didn’t happen either. Straight divorce has nothing to do with SSM, and the latest casualties of their own hypocrisy, Sanford and Ensign can no longer uphold the sanctity of marriage mantra. So what now?
One of the biggest hypocrites of all is actually Maggie Gallagher herself, a once UNWED mother having premarital sex contrary to her religious beliefs. I suppose she blames LGBT people for that too. Its clear these morons are desperate, clutching at straws. Deep down they know they’re losing the cultural war so they resort to such measures and now running out of any rational excuse to barr us from marriage. Religious cults aren’t rational though.
They didn’t respond because there is only an upside to society, hello!
