Withers: Joe Lieberman turning into a good attack dog

By James Withers, contributing editor, 365Gay Blog 08.13.2008 8:31am EDT

Joe Lieberman

Looks like Joe Lieberman is not reading his McCain memos that closely. The presumptive Republican nominee has said the recent conflict between Georgia and Russia should be above partisan notes.

“I respect Senator Obama’s views and I believe that it’s important that we act in a bipartisan fashion now,” McCain told the good folk over at FOX . “There’s no room for partisanship now.”

A fair sentiment that McCain should get props for. But Lieberman, the senator from Connecticut, knows his role in this campaign and being fair is not included in the job. Instead the “independent Democrat” throws out the mud and acts all shocked when called on it.

Lieberman decided to take Barack Obama to task for his initial comments about the conflict and went for the inexperience memo faster than me reaching for an order of  Wendy’s biggie fries.

“The last few days, four or five days, we’ve seen one of the most unexpected crises in the world as the Russians moved into Georgia as aggressors. And if you read the statements from the beginning, Senator McCain and Senator Obama, one had kind of moral neutrality to it that comes I think from inexperience,” Lieberman said. “The other, Senator McCain, was strong and clear and principled and put America where America always wants to be.”

Now Lieberman being Lieberman, he forgot to mention that Obama’s statement was similar in tone to what the White House said. Oh but pesky facts are never Joe’s best friends. They confuse him.

  • I agree with Chris. Lieberman obviously has an axe to grind with the Democratic Party. Does anyone really care what he has to say….about anything?

  • The only reason Lieberman still aligns himself with the Democratic caucus is because he’s currently chairman of the homeland security committee. And the Democrats seem poised to pickup more seats in both houses this year. If the Republicans actually had any hope of regaining control of Congress, he’d switch parties in a second.

  • I think Lieberman is a jerk and should not be in the Democratic party.

  • I hope that when the Democrats win in November, the 1st thing they do in January is kick Leiberman’s ass out.

  • If the Democrats win this election with a veto proof majority in the Senate, I’d take away Lieberman’s chairmanships and kick him out of the party for good. He is a snake!

  • Nancy Pelosi recently made the same remarks about Lieberman’s future in the Democratic Party if they gain a majority without need for his one vote. In essence, his future in the Democratic Party will be non-existent - as it should be.

  • No matter who wins in November, Lieberman will be switching parties.

  • Let’s not be so hard on John Edwards, Mr. Sullivan. He may be a bit of a dog (especially considering what a wonderful person his wife is) and it was not cool how he misled his supporters, possibly broke campaign finance laws and played Russian Roulette with the electoral prospects of Dems. Still, comparing him to a low-life slimebag like Joe Loserman is really below the belt!

John Edwards, despite his failings, is still a man who genuinely cares, I believe, about those who have been left behind in our society and who has done much to assist such individuals and to raise the profile of their struggles as well as to push for such laudable goals as universal health insurance coverage.

Loserman, on the other hand, is a fear-mongering nutjob who has been on the front lines of the most shameful lines of attack against Senator Obama this year, including when he recently, without offering any evidence, charged that Senator Obama has not “always put the country first.” Disgraceful. By comparison, John Edwards is a saint.
