Withers: John Edwards snared in scandal

By James Withers, contributing editor, 365Gay Blog 08.09.2008 11:45am EDT

John Edwards-top

A co-worker said it best: what Maury Povich mess has John Edwards got himself into?!

Yesterday Edwards, a former senator and Democratic presidential candidate, finally fessed up about an extramarital affair he had with campaign staffer Rielle Hunter. Edwards did insist however, he’s not the father of Hunter’s child and the dalliance occurred when Elizabeth Edwards’ incurable cancer was in remission. Dear Senator Edwards: that fact is not going to help you in your pr offensive.

The story was the undertow of Edwards’ recent run for the White House, with him making the occasional vigorous denials as the tabloids played it up and the mainstream press whistled in the dark.

The MSM will have to at some point answer for why it thought to keep this tale of “sex and sin” on the down-low.The New York Times felt okay about publishing an article that hinted at John McCain’s extra-marriage activities. Would like to know why the paper passed on the Edwards tale.

But I have to say, these sexual shenanigans have already taken a boring story arc. Reporters/commentators being shocked and appalled at Edwards’ behavior, the breathless search to get the time-line down exactly right so Edwards’ alleged paternity can be (dis)proven.

Cheating on a spouse, alas, is rather common but for some reason we turn all moralistic when a pol gets caught with someone he/she is not married to. Don’t know why this is but it would be nice if we stopped expecting our elected officials to be better than us when it comes to the bedroom ethics.

    • “More proof of the vast left conspiracy out to stop Hillary!”

      :-) That’s funny.

      Sincerely,

    • Until such time as politicians AND clerics of BOTH Parties learn that zippers are double-acting (”they go down; they ALSO go UP”), I think it’s time for EVERYBODY (but especially the Konservative Kristianist Krazies and so-called “public figures”) to SHUT UP about private morality.Evidently we learned NOTHING from the debacle of Prohibition.

    • Hypocrite, he is against gay marriage to save straight marriage. Save it for what? Gays are more committed than Straights. I never trusted his fake smile. Hope he burns for having sex when his wife is dying of cancer. SHAME!

    • More proof of the vast left conspiracy out to stop Hillary! This is a crying shame… Hillary would have easily won the election against McCain.
Consider this: if the MSM had followed the Edwards story when it erupted in the NE last October, Hillary would now be the Democratic nominee. By sitting on the story until now, the MSM did a great service for their favorite Obama by forcing Clinton to take on Edwards.
      Still hope for Denver

    • Really! Do we not have better things to think about? Who cares if they have an affair? It shows they are human and make mistakes.
