Withers: APA debunks “turning straight” theories

This will make the fundies prissier than usual. Actually they are an uptight people. Religious fundies only seem happy when you are telling them their God is the only one and their preacher is the only servant  who can spread the word (Annie: please talk to your people about that). The American Psychological Association adopted a resolution saying health care professionals should stay away from telling their patients they can transform their sexuality.

“Contrary to claims of sexual orientation change advocates and practitioners, there is insufficient evidence to support the use of psychological interventions to change sexual orientation,” said Judith M. Glassgold, chair of the task force that worked on the resolution.

Those who think “conversion therapy”  just needs significant amount of prayer will protest and argue their science is being ignored by secular humanists who want to turn us all into sodomites (what’s wrong with that?). We hear the same complaint from intelligent design folk who are sure their theories are treated with hostility. Neither group points out their “science” is mocked because it fails to even engage the rudimentary levels of investigation. Remember Richard Cohen, the fool who got some play a few years back because part of his turn straight treatment was hitting a pillow with a tennis racket and screaming? And don’t forget his cuddling technique! What a way to cop a man feel under the guise of therapy.

I wish “conversion therapy” advocates would just admit they are in the business to get a little  squeeze now and then. “My tongue down your throat will help you heal from your sinful desires.” The emotional health of their patients is the least of their concerns.

    • The APA is attempting to play politics. If you read the actual statement that was approved it is not nearly strong enough.

“Reparative” therapy causes great harm that could lead to death. How hard is it to call this sham what it is?

    • This is clearly an attempt by the APA to flatly denounce conversion therapy. As an scientific organization this is about as strong a statement as they can officially make.

    • I hope the Exodus program crashes and burns soon. But who knows, maybe if they pray hard enough it’ll be like this whole thing never happened!

    • Good to see the APA make this move. Conversion therapy is a fraud, and that last line is distilled truth. It’s scary that some “conversion therapists” are licensed–if there’s a license involved, that makes it more likely that an insurance company might pay for the fraud.

    • Once again, spot “on” with every word, Mr. Withers. Thanks you for telling this dreadfully damaging subject just as it really is—a very sick making sham!
