Withers: Perez Hilton is sexist and racist

Writing about Perez Hilton, the dirty mouth of Hollywood, makes me want to shower to get the grime off. So this is it for me. Unless I hear Hilton is producing a bio-pic on Lester Young, I’m finished. While he likes to be the center of any party, his ego will not suffer from my embargo. People know the name Perez Hilton. You only say mine  if you are looking for fries with your meal.

Hilton got a good cover spread in the most recent Advocate. He talks about his affinity with Madonna and Oprah, his run-in with Will.I.Am  how much he despises dishonesty, that his calling is a civil rights leader(!) blah, blah, blah. When  he talks about the aftermath of the Toronto drama, Hilton offers platitudes that would shame any self respecting Lifetime movie writer.

“But what’s come out of all of this is that I’ve learned so much about myself, and I’m in a much better place. I’m actually thankful that it happened. As cheesy as it may sound, I had almost a spiritual moment when I just let all of the anger and worry go and am now filled with peace, happiness, and wisdom.”

Aside from that drippy and silly mess, Hilton also says he wanted to call Will.I.Am something else.

“I thought about calling him the n word, but I thought the f word was even worse. I was so filled with hate at that moment because I was hated on so much, and I reacted in the worst way possible.”

So instead of nigger, Hilton went for faggot? Jeesh, is there a reason to even be surprised? This is a guy who is certain calling Carrie Prejean a female dog has nothing to do with his sexism because he just adores women. Short history lesson Ms. Hilton: America gave gold medalist Jesse Owens a ticker-tape parade when he returned from Munich in 1936, but he still had to sit in the back of the bus. I have this silly habit of looking for more than bigoted taunting from someone who considers his vocation civil rights. I can get name calling from a few  Chicago t-shirts thank you very much.

This “thinking”should not  surprise coming from a guy who just wants to be sure his name is mentioned. Well I’ve done it for the last time.

    • If the gay community and it’s literature, websites, and periodicals continue to focus attention on Perez Hilton, he becomes what we don’t want or need. It is time to do what the Amish do. Shun Perez Hilton.

    • Mr Withers:

Please do not give up on Mr. Hilton.

He is taking all of us down with him, and you rightly call him on it. While he gets more exposure than you do, you get more exposure than I do. Use it to rid us of this nuisance-turned-menace.

So he thought about using the n word before the f word? That’s all I really need to know about his civil rights platform: I don’t want a man with that kind of chip on his shoulder representing my rights, your rights, or even Ms. Prejean’s rights.

As a white gay American male just past 40, I am lucky on many counts – not least of all the fact that I live in Canada, where I am protected as an “invisible minority”.

You are probably close to my age, and you inhabit both (Canadian) definitions of minority; “visible” and “invisible”. As I am generally interested in seeing my homeland become a better place, I need information and commentary from people who are not like me. I know what white male 40-somethings think.

      Don’t we all?

Yes, Mr. Withers, I will risk sounding racist here by admitting that I read your column because you’re a visible minority. I don’t assume you to be the voice of black gay America. I assume you to be the voice of Mr. Withers. You teach me a lot about black life in the US – as do some writers for the Root, the NYT, etc…

Why do I need this info?

      1. Because being an “invisible minority” is different from being a “visible minority”.

      2. Because being a proud, Detroit-born American who believes in constant self-education forces me to try to understand those things that I won’t ever experience for myself (I don’t get followed around stores like my black friends do).

      3. Because I don’t understand racism in the US (I grew up in Belgium: I can tell you all about how the Flemish and Walloons hate each other).

While the above has no particular bearing on your honorable assault on Mr. Hilton, the fact that you are also repelled by his self-appointment as protector of our rights makes me feel that I am reading the words of a sensible man.

So please continue to assail Mr. Hilton for as long as he deserves it. And in this case, wherein Mr. Hilton judiciously chooses the f word over the n word; wherein Mr. Hilton verbally assaults a woman for expressing her (inane) opinion in a manner degrading to ALL women; and wherein Mr. Hilton then claims the moral high ground (OUR civil rights) – well, Mr. Withers, I want to hear what you have to say.

    • Though I don’t fancy Perez Hilton, he clearly is within his rights to say anything that strikes him, meanwhile, I always thought this column was sexist and racist. Takes one to know one, or something like that.

    • Interested,

“If James fails to live up to his promise and writes about he who shall not be named again, I promise not to even click on it. ”

      All fair.

      Sincerely,

      James

    • Much like any internet troll, even disagreeing feeds him. I disagree with much of what he does, and am actually, honestly not interested in the rest.

I read this solely because I enjoy Withers, not for the topic. If James fails to live up to his promise and writes about he who shall not be named again, I promise not to even click on it.

    • I am ashamed of the Advocate for not only doing an article on this waste of space, but also putting him on the cover. I know what magazine I am canceling my subscription to.

    • Perez Hilton is a mess. We should declare a moratorium on mentioning his name. We don’t need a self-declared leader like him.

  • scott Said: July 7th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
    • Nobody would ever follow him. Nobody takes him seriously. He fails to realize HE is the joke.

    • He’s a nasty, bitter queen–how much worse is he gonna be by the time he hits 40? Never been to his site, don’t want to know about him. Why the hell would I want to watch somebody manufacture drama–just so I could watch a trainwreck? He’s carved out his niche, but it could destroy him in the end. His problem.

  • Kris Said: July 7th, 2009 at 10:16 am
    • I’ve never been to his website and don’t really know to much about him, other than he being a great big “QUEEN”. Next?!?

  • Robin Said: July 7th, 2009 at 10:03 am
    • Just out of courisity, why even waste space when you have the good taste to know what an insect hilton is??? If people would boycott his web site totally, this insect’s 15 mins of fame would be overwith for good.

    • Perez is Perez, you act like you yourself has never called anyone a hateful name and meant it. EVERYONE talks about EVERYONE, and people know it too; Perez just talks about EVERYONE on a website that millions of people view everyday.
