Withers: Perez Hilton gets a beat down

By James Withers, contributing editor, 365Gay Blog 06.23.2009 9:23am EDT

perez-hilton-top

Let’s give Perez Hilton a standing ovation. With Carrie Prejean now on the conservative chicken dinner circuit, Hilton needed another enemy to keep his name in the press. So he quickly dumped his status as spokesperson for gay marriage and now will be the poster boy for anti-gay violence.

Hilton got into an altercation with Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas in Toronto. Hilton, who made a video describing the whole evening, decided to throw an anti-gay epithet at the singer and got smacked by the band’s manager. Last time I checked Polo Molina, the guy accused of the assault, turned himself in to the Toronto police.

Because this is a Hilton story, it is a mess of drama. Hilton says he was with Lady Gaga when all of this happened, but as of now she has not said anything about the early morning fracas. After he was allegedly hit, Hilton made sure his pleas for police assistance were on his Twitter page, like any good media whore professional would. Finally, Hilton’s video describing what happened is the funniest thing I’ve seen since Dave Chappelle walked away from his show. The hysterics. The tears. The emotion. The bromides against violence. Someone give the man an award for this performance art.

If Molina is guilty of hitting the Hilton, the band’s manager needs to be punished. We all can agree on that. Yet, Hilton’s choice to throw out the f word indicates all I need to know. Oh, yeah he’ll go on and on and on about gay rights and such but has no problem with using a gay slur if it means money in his purse.

    • As a gay man, I CAN’T STAND this obnoxious, mean spirited faggot!…He is the embodiment of every negative stereotype assigned to us and then some!

It’s a shame that such an embarrasment to the gay community as HIM gets so much press that SPECIFICALLY MENTIONS his homosexuality while people who are assets to our community get none, or the press never brings up the fact that they are gay.

I can totally understand anyones desire to assault him.

I agree. Is like some gays expect ALL gays should be all clean cut role models. Only straight people should be able to be ridiculous because straights are the majority and they don’t risk to misrepresent their group. To all this people just a reminder. Gays are human too. Not a master race. HUMAN. Perez doesn’t represent me, because he is ENT-TER-TAIN-MENT. For chris sake, his name comes from a reality show character. You give him WAY too much credit it feels like everything gay is ruined because one individual. If it worked that way LORD OF THE DANCE already obliterated us by now. And you people should go and support your local gay bookstore, learn about REAL gay icons and not what TMZ tells you.

    • David,

Having a difficult time reading? Maybe you should look at this line:

“If Molina is guilty of hitting the Hilton, the band’s manager needs to be punished. We all can agree on that.”

How is that not supporting your boy Hilton?

By the way: do you feel better throwing the n word my way? I hope you do sweetie.

      Kisses

      James

Perez is an embarassment to the lgbt community”

Julianne, he’s not an embarrasment to the LGBT community, he’s an embarrasment to the human race.

      My two cents,
      John L

Somehow I don’t think that’s the point some people here were trying to make. I don’t know why people bother attacking others making comments on a silly article just because people are expressing how they feel. I mean what gives you the right to tell someone who they are, what they believe in and twist what they say for your own platform? Oh right this is America as someone has pointed out and rather than just simply stating your point that Perez is an embarrassment to himself and not the whole community, you had to single out and attack someone for how they feel. How much better does that make you?

Maybe you don’t care and that’s great but belittling other people is plain immature and so self-righteous. Maybe you should have asked people what they meant and actually engage in a conversation with them before making your own assumptions and criticizing them. I don’t even think him being a gay icon is mentioned by the single person you called out.

However, I do agree with the point that Perez isn’t a gay icon or representative of the LGBT community, but don’t you think others not in our community would see it differently and have his antics be used against us? Think about it. He’s a “celebrity” with TV time and whatever he says will be broadcasted either on “news” websites or TV shows. Like it or not, he’s out and he’s a presence in the media which unfortunately brainwashes those who choose to believe what they read, hear and see as the “real” truth about things. Either way, he’s just fueling the flames of the stereotypes of gays. But that’s just my opinion. Criticize away!

    • @ Jake R.

I don’t agree that “famous” gay people should watch themselves even more because somehow some people outside the community might get the idea they represent the gay community as a whole. Why? Because that would be the problem of the person who is judging us. The same people probably does the same with people from other countries or ethnic groups, and that, sadly is the mentality of a lot of people. So if they think that way I don’t care about that segment of the population and their simplified thought process. We shouldn’t have to convince or accommodate the public to understand what being gay is all about. Because I’m sure as hell they don’t go saying “Fred Phelps is an idiot but don’t worry, he doesn’t represent all straight people.” So why we have to add a disclaimer every time a gay does something stupid. If people understand that ONE doesn’t mean ALL for them, that should apply to us too.

    • the bottom line here is so meny stupid rednecks americans lose thier tempers over silly words and other silly bullshit. It goes to show why america engages in useless wars and why we dont have meny friends in the world anymore. Bullies are bullies no matter what color you paint them!

I couldn’t agree with you more. However, I do want to point out that I didn’t say that he had a responsibility to clean up his act. I think people in our community can have the right to be appalled, but just need to remember that Perez is not a representative for all gays, thankfully!

My point was merely to say that it’s just sad that things like TV and media outlets have such a powerful influence on telling some people what’s real, right, and true.

    • Hey,
      check this out,
“The (nauseating) world according to Perez”
      from Pajiba.com.
link to this Pajiba blog entry:

      http://www.pajiba.com/blog_reviews/perez-hilton.php

I don’t have never heard of Pajiba before, found this while googling for Perez Hilton’s “real name.”

For whatever it is worth, it some blogger’s unflattering take on this “Perez Hilton” character.

    • This happened in Canada, and under Canadian Law Hilton, for what he said, can be taken to the Human Rights Tribunal. I’d love to see him get charged. Love it!

I’m only surprised that he has not been hit before, to be honest with you. I mean, he is the equivalent of a school yard bully with a national platform to abuse and degrade his targets. And he gets paid for it.

Sure, I’d love to see him get throttled via a witty remark, but sadly he does not possess the intelligence to grasp any.

    • David Blaine,

Have we not learned something from our antigay oppression, like you don’t use racist language, etc?

    • ABOUT TIME!!! Im so sick of this dude. He’s pathetic and i’m glad someone has “hit” him back down to earth!!!

    • Well said Michael W., Mr. Hilton does not represent me or anyone I know. The sad part is, he probably didn’t learn the lesson most of learn at an early age. If you’re going to talk shit, you had better have the ability to back it up. Words may not hurt, but the backlash of something aserbically spoken can. What’s really sad is that we’re talking about him. Once he realizes his actions won’t garner our attention, he’ll stop or move on.
