Obama’s latest “memorandum” to give SOME benefits to federal employees’ gay partners is an insult to the GLBT community. Obama promises us a feast before he’s elected and then dishes out table scraps once he’s in office. A presidential “memo” has no legal standing at all, especially when the next prez comes along. As for the issues of repealing DOMA and “don’t ask, don’t tell,” Obama has proven himself to be a liar and a hypocrite.

I completely agree. This is a point that does not get made nearly often enough.

Politicians, especially at the national level mcuh less the President, make life and death decisions every day. Every day they make choices that will dramatically affect the futures of large numbers of people. And by necessity, they often make these decisions quickly and without becoming experts on the matter.

Merely telling them that some action was unpopular with us or hurt our feelings simply is not an effective strategy for changing their plans. Every action they take offends someone.

It is up to us to make it clear to them that the only viable solution lies in our direction, not just in the long term but in the short term as well.

Joe Solmonese’s letter was very well done. Good for him! Frankly, it has been HRC’s style not to take such a firm stand. Good for HRC. Did it have weaknesses? Sure, but I am glad they did it. Does their leadership style seem painfully submissive…yes, but the grassroots are shaping events now as well and thankfully so.

Remember, the best revenge is a life well lived.

The LGBT community should circulate a petition to wake Obama and the Dems up about a few things. The petition should ask gay & lesbian people not to give any money, support, or votes to any Democrat until they pass some of the pro-LGBT legislation they have promised us. In other words, no equality for gay & lesbian people = no money, support or votes for the Dems. After several thousand people sign on to it, that will get their attention and turn them around.
