Withers: HRC goes after Obama

This post will be bitter by half. Let’s get the puppies and rainbows out of the way first. Bravo to Joe Solmonese and his letter to the President Barack Obama. While I still need some more info about Human Rights Campaign and the alleged deal on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” always nice to see HRC send out something that isn’t about fund raising.

OK, here comes the bitta. Not clear who approves these HRC missives, but in the future, please stay away from this phrase. Please. As in pretty and please.

“I cannot overstate the pain that we feel as human beings and as families when we read an argument, presented in federal court, implying that our own marriages have no more constitutional standing than incestuous ones.”

The pain we feel. The pain we feel. Excuse me but a politician does not care one whit about pain, such as it is, unless it’s the pain of losing an election or not getting a contribution. Emotional attempts at empathy fall flat in the rough and tumble world of politics because it is a chip with no value. Sure it would have been nice if the person drafting and approving the DOMA defense actually thought about how the incest line would be read, but I also want some hair, Denzel to have won the Oscar for Malcolm X instead of Training Day, and HBO’s The Wire to have earned one Emmy acting nomination (while I’m on the topic here is something private to anyone who went gaga over The Sopranos but couldn’t give The Wire any Emmy loving: you are an idiot).

Obama, like any pol, responds to power or its threat. In the Solmonese letter there is nothing about consequences. Nada. What is HRC going to do if Obama doesn’t do anything about DADT or DOMA? If we are looking for change, then that is the question that must be answered. If not, Obama will do what all pols have done before him. Move on and search for other votes.

    • I miss Elizabeth Birch. She had more cajones than this guy.
I’m so tired of pretty people driving their convertibles to cosmopolitan sipping fundraisers for people who screw us over time and time again.

    • I removed my DNC membership last week. I don’t give a damn what Obama or any of his homophobic lackeys are up to.

    • You know what my new policy on Obama is? its called “don’t ask, don’t tell” it goes like this: I don’t ask how he’s doing, and you don’t tell me about it. If enough people followed this simple policy with him, he would have never gotten into office.

    • Funny that Joe found his balls right after I sent him a letter asking if he found any :)

I’m not egocentric enough to think this is in reaction to my letter, but it still nice feels somehow. I hope he had a BASKET full of letters asking where the hell was his righteous outrage at the indignities Obama has heaped on our community.

Screw Obama and screw the DNC until they can get on board and end gay apartheid!

    • “Obama Intends to Extend Federal Benefits to Unmarried Partners”

Fuck him and fuck this piddly little pile of crumbs.
Don’t piss on my head and tell me it’s raining. I don’t fall for “trickle down” ANYTHING since the Reagan years.

    • “Obama, like any pol, responds to power or its threat”. So much for the prospect of CHANGE. Oh, that’s right, CHANGE is just another unkept promise. Blue in a blue state.

    • Solmonese is a spoiled and useless lap dog, barking to get a bone. His master will simply brush him off his lap (“Bad doggie, go lay down!). The only thing the Democrats understand is power, the same thing the Republicans understand. As I ‘ve written before lets start using our power to our own advantage. Pro-actively work for our Repubican enemies instead of our Democratic ones in 2010. Do it, “Just One Time” Do en masse.

Then the Democrats will be our lap dog in 2012 and beyond. Any body else feel insulted by the extension of Federal Benefits to same sex partners as a sop for DOJ defending DADT and DOMA? God,the gall!

    • It is about time…. Personally I think that we, as the gay community, should not let Obama back off of his promises to us. The Christian Right would not have allowed the type of things that HRC has looked the other way on to happen. In my Opinion HRC should have stood more firm over the whole Rick Warren episode. To pick the most polarizing anti-gay person to speak is reprehensible and to allow it as HRC did is insane. A few scathing comments but that was it.

Now before I get blasted for being anti HRC. I am a very big supporter of HRC and the goals as an organization. I just have issues that since Solmonese has taken over there have been back room deals on ENDA, and with Obama. This just makes me feel as if we will allow ourselves to be thrown under the bus again. It is the time to stand and stand firm for the Repeal of DADT and DOMA as well as pass Federal Recognition of our relationships (full recognition) and pass ENDA. Like probably no other time in history we have a Legislative body that will be willing to deal with these issues. We need the Executive branch to step up to the plate as they said they would and make the word equality a reality in this country. If as the largest rights organization for the gay community HRC, and its leadership cannot get it done than maybe we need new leadership who is going to get it done. The time has come and the time is now.

    • I still believe Obama is going to do good things for the USA….I had hoped he would do great things. I now believe that my fisrt opinion was the one to trust… Hilary Clinton was the better man (no I’m not sexist or racist)!

I believe Obama is more in love with his presidency than anyone else on the planet.

He may go down as a colosal mistake or as Bush Lite!
So far he has been off limits to comedic fodder and criticism,,,, but those days are soon to be gone and he may end up with a calender giving examples of his ineptness issued on a daily basis.

    • The LGBT community should circulate a petition to wake Obama and the Dems up about a few things. The petition should ask gay & lesbian people not to give any money, support, or votes to any Democrat until they pass some of the pro-LGBT legislation they have promised us. In other words, no equality for gay & lesbian people = no money, support or votes for the Dems. After several thousand people sign on to it, that will get their attention and turn them around.

    • Joe Solmonese’s letter was very well done. Good for him! Frankly, it has been HRC’s style not to take such a firm stand. Good for HRC. Did it have weaknesses? Sure, but I am glad they did it. Does their leadership style seem painfully submissive…yes, but the grassroots are shaping events now as well and thankfully so.

Remember, the best revenge is a life well lived.
