This will earn me no love, but that’s okay. Mr. G likes me (at least I hope so). I understand why people are out of sorts with Carrie Prejean, Miss California. Her answer about same sex marriage and subsequent poster child status for the National Organization for Marriage grate. I still don’t get why anyone cares about what comes out of her mouth, but to this day I’m still unsure why Madonna is famous. I humbly accept my minority status on this topic (and the Madonna thing too).
Yet the whole Prejean “racy” photos saga leaves me befuddled. Sure if you are a fundie throwing out the line about “protecting marriage” from those nasty gays, it makes sense to be disappointed at little Miss Prejean. You loved her pluck, vision, and strength against that ruthless gay mafia. Wanted your daughters to be like her (possibly with a few more books under their belts), and your sons to marry her. Then she goes out and ruins the myth with those “nasty” pictures. Makes a person with morals clutch her pearls and wonder if anything is true and pure.
So fundie anger adds up. Anyone else getting bent out of shape is beyond me. Last August we covered the hullabaloo about two University of Nebraska wrestlers who posed for Fratmentv.com. Both guys were booted off the team and most of the people leaving comments here took the school to task for making it such a big deal. A fair point I thought, but if it applies to the wrestlers what about Prejean? Could the difference be because they were cute and didn’t say anything controversial?
I’m not in the mood to defend her this morning but I will say this. You want to dog Prejean out for her views on gay marriage, have at it. But getting funky because of photos is a weak and tired game, especially if you weren’t doing the same for former Cornhusker athletes.
PS: unless it comes out that Prejean is the illegitimate love child of Billie Holiday and Dom DeLuise (RIP brother) you will not be subjected to my yammering about her anymore. This is a good time for my religious readers to hit their knees and thank their Maker.
I am not offended by her nude photos. I am offended by her hypocrisy. I also don’t think Christians should be exempt from having to comply with contracts that they willingly signed, including provisions that they not make appearances or commercials without the permission of the Miss California Pageant.

Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. I lived through Mrs. Bryant’s hate-campaign. It was (and Ms Prejean’s remains) a LIE-based campaign against our equality.

Methinks Ms Prejean made her own mess by breaking her contract. Let her stew in it.
She also betrayed her own faith by bearing false witness against her GLBT neighbors.

yes i totally agree with you. Just because she answered a question long time ago, move on we are about to have 2 more states allow same sex marriage we all know that the nation is changing. It just takes time and allowing people like miss cali slam you and anger you. And i think no christian being one myself should enter in the miss america pagent.

The photos wouldn’t be a big deal if not for her hypocrisy. If she is such a strong Christian that she can’t stand to see gays get married, then she should be such a strong Christian that she wouldn’t take such photos. But, yet again, we have someone who wants one set of rules for others and a whole separate set of rules for herself. That’s the difference between her and the wrestlers.
What Withers is talking about, I assume, is that we as a community can not make her into more than a blip on the horizon. Continually attacking her, calling her a dumb bitch and other instances are making her a funded darling of the right. We don’t need a 20 year old, blonde girl being protected from us by middle America.
I am simply amused at the fact that NOM now has egg on their face because of this “little christian girl” having photos from her past being less than the “christians” would like them to be. I am delighted they are squirming a bit because of it. I have absolutely nothing against her posing for any pictures she wants to. However if she loses her crown because of her lies, it doesn’t hurt me personally, but I WILL get some gratification from the fact that it hurts HER.
Hypocrisy has its own rewards, most people just don’t LIKE the reward they get from it.

Sorry, but its the right wing christo fundies playing the victim card in the guise of Prejean. When these same people take a swipe at us, we’re not supposed to respond. Prejean is a hypocrite. Using biblical correctness to justify her opposition to same-sex marriage is flawed. Entering a beauty contest and appearing in a skimpy, cleavage-revealing swimsuit are definitely NOT biblically correct or tolerated according to the scriptures that she believes are the truth. Therein lies her hypocrisy and those who support her.
Sorry Withers — the analogy to the Nebraska wrestlers just doesn’t hold-up.
The wrestlers from Nebraska were booted from a secular university because their actions didn’t fit-in with someone’s concept of ‘moral behavior,’ but they were never asked to sign a statement that they never posed nude or near-nude and those boys didn’t publicly pontificate on their skewed view of the bible or the moral implications thereof. The University simply had no business being involved there.
Miss CA, on the other hand, placed herself in the public arena by announcing that she was an arbiter of christian morals while at the same time parading her near-naked and artificially-enhanced body around in a commercialized soft-core porn exercise called a pageant, having lied about her past actions to the organizers of the Miss CA event — the very people who paid-for her boob-job. What hypocrisy. Still, I would have ignored it had she not continued to let her mouth spew garbage while her brain idled, and blamied the result of her folly on bias from the ‘uber-powerful gay lobby.’
I don’t give a flying fig about her opinions but I do object to an amateur stripper-trainee suggesting on national TV and to the media-at-large that her shaky morals should somehow trump my life.
Gays are commenting because Miss Cali is a hypocrite. She obviously isn’t the paragon of virtue she pretends to be. Those athletes weren’t standing on any kind of moral platform. They were just making a buck to get through school. That’s the difference.
You know…I have to say that this should not be a topic. She has made herself front and center for continuing to express her offensive views on everyone! As a gay american we all should he offended so stop it with the VICTIM card…we are the victims if you ask me! The victim of hatred and discrimination!
Thanks for your Blog James about Miss Calfornia, I normally like what you write and I enjoy the style in which you write. But this time I think you are wrong, Miss Calfornia should be held accountable for her racey pictures. As you said with the two Wrestlers and their picrtures being no big deal, They did not sign a contract stating they never have or never would have racey pictures taken. Miss Calfornia signed a contract stating she has never had pictures of this natual taken of her ***BIG DIFFERENCE***. She can believe what she wants, but she was still expected to tell the truth about her so called modeling pictures. Thanks peace out and have a gay day.
Her 15 minutes, actually now about 30 minutes should be up she will give up her crown, go on her crusade, and because she can speak so well she will probably get a job working for FOX news!!! We have helped make her a STAR!!! More than she ever would have had if she would have won the silly pageant!!!
She has lied about alot of stuff. Her sister is not a gay activist, the pageant didn’t ask her to apologize, they didn’t ask her to not talk about her religion, and she lied when she signed her agreement stating she hadn’t posed nude or nearly nude.
She has violated her contract by making personal appearances, giving interviews or making commercials without permission from pageant officials.
And she is hiding behind her cloak of self-righteousness and her self-serving “biblical values” and you think she is a victim?
She brought all this on herself. The gossip is only going to get worse as more of her pictures surface and she is likely going to be disqualified as Ms Calif.
