Withers: A new gay Republican group emerges

This is slightly old but who doesn’t love a gay Republican tale? Looks like many of you are going to have to dust off the “self-hating” epithet and throw it a new gay conservative organization.

Called GOProud, the new tax-exempt 527 will offer another home for gay and  lesbian conservatives outside of the Log Cabin Republicans (where are they?). The organization’s take-off will happen tomorrow and its focus will be elections and federal issues.

“There hasn’t been a voice for … gay conservatives for the last five months, really, in Washington,” said Jimmy LaSalvia, GoProud’s executive director and a former Log Cabin policy director. “And so as that time has lapsed, that was when we made the assessment and determined the need for an organization in Washington and put the pieces in place to make that happen.”

I’ve been writing here long enough (for some  that is a problem) to know the responses. A hardy few will say this is a good thing. They will point out that wanting to wake up next to a cute lad or gal (or both!) doesn’t have much to do with ideology. The majority though, will throw out the word traitor. Make some historical connection with Jews for Hitler and question the mental stability of any gay person who says the word Republican minus a curse.

GoProud  deserves a fair hearing. No matter how much we gnash our teeth, there are a number of our gay brothers and sisters who are right of center. Here are some numbers presented by LaSalvia. In last year’s election approximately 5 percent of voters identified as gay. Of those 27 percent gave their votes to John McCain. Don’t they deserve a political organization that represents and advocates their interests?

PS: RIP Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick.

    • Until this party stops doing everything they can to keep us down, All this seems so silly to me. I am left of center and most likely always will be. But I can feel for those that are Gay and Right wing. I am tempted to think that many of them are more interested in their dollars than their and our civil rights. But I would love it if they actually could change their party. Until then such groups just seem like a waste of time to me.

    • I love gay Republicans. I love they way they get behind people who hate us. I love how they argue with us. I love how they try to convince us.

    • The Republican party is over flowing with all the witch burners, mullahs and clerics of the religious right, KKK, Nazis etc. With this much garbage in their party you can see why they have no room for gays. They deserve to go down into the junk heap of history.

    • While my social agenda is probably more radical than most democrats, I firmly believe in smaller governent. I would love to be able to vote republican however their party seems to be about lowering taxes and increasing the size of government which when added to there anti-equality views means there isn’t a political party for me. I hope this group can succeed where the Log Cabins could not. I might suggest grabbing Megan McCain to support as she doesn’t believe in outlawing abortion, but she does believe in supporting civil marriage equality, and she still claims to be a Republican.

    • Is this Log Cabin redux? Is this just another GOP group that’s only concerned with their tax-cuts for the wealthy and keeping their DADT “white’s only” country club membership? Lets see!

    • Jarrod & Frankly, let me know how the Obama Presidency and a Democrat controlled congress has worked for ya.

I rank the Republican Ass Kissers right up there with the Democratian Ass Kissers.

    • Most people don’t seem to understand that in this two party system of ours, the parties are pre-built coalition governments. Democrats: Social liberals, Gays, Blacks, Union members, trial lawyers, big government supporters. Republicans: Evangelicals, fiscal conservations, social conservatives, business interests, small government libertarian types.

So, where does one go if she is a lesbian, libertarian type? Her coalitions are split between the parties. If she votes Democrat, she goes against her small government libertarian ideals. If she votes Republican, she votes against her interests as a lesbian.

I hope that this new group can help shuffle the tents around so one does not need to sacrifice half of their principles for the other half…

    • I myself am a gay Republican, and there is nothing like not feeling welcome in either the gay community or the Republican community. However, I stand by my conservative values (nothing to do with religion). How can having people inside the Republican party working for gay rights hurt?!

Why should I let my sexual orientation be the overriding factor in my beliefs? This isn’t the one-drop rule here. I feel that many members of the Republican party have strayed from the initial values. For instance, a federal amendment to the constitution is NOT a Republican course of action, but for gays and abortion, some would be more than happy to pass such legislation.

Time will tell, but it looks like marriage is slowly but surely being accepted on a state by state basis. Why can’t we work together for the same cause, but from opposite sides of the aisle?

    • Iou, just join the libertarian party.
Both the Democrats and Republicans suck.
Republicans haven’t done anything to limit the government’s size in years.
I consider myself a libertarian for the most part. Republicans are too hateful for me and Democrats are spineless when it comes to gay rights most of the time.

    • It’s odd this seems so difficult. A gay republican. I feel no woman in her right mind would’ve voted for Obama.

  • DeAnimator Said: April 14th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
    • This reminds me of all the gay white power skinhead groups there are. Good to see this type of ignorance is extending more publicly! Hooray!

    • “It’s odd this seems so difficult. A gay republican. I feel no woman in her right mind would’ve voted for Obama.”

These two sentences really make no sense, but I guess The Menstruator is trying to show how radical she is.

  • Frankly Said: April 15th, 2009 at 1:10 am
    • I voted for Obama. I am a Dem with left of center views.

However, the guy that I see a conservative, Republican who wears polyester for a living.

We argue. We pole one another. But I love that he has his own mind. And he does respect mine. We just disagree about certain things.

      So back off.
