Withers: High poverty rates for same-sex couples
No need to turn 365 into a playground where Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia is bullied; however, I thought of him today after reading the study by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law. “Poverty in the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Community” called into question the whole gay wealth mythology and noted “after adjusting for a range of family characteristics that help explain poverty, gay and lesbian couple families are significantly more likely to be poor than are heterosexual married couple families.”
This contradicts a theory Scalia posited in a strongly worded dissent in Romer v. Evans, a Supreme Court decision that struck down Colorado’s anti-gay initiative. According to the associate justice gays and lesbians “have high disposable income” and “possess political power much greater than their numbers.”
Not sure if the work by the Williams Institute will have any impact on Scalia’s thinking. I tend to doubt it.
