Withers: NOM has gay support but refuses to talk about it

By James Withers, contributing editor, 365Gay Blog 03.10.2010 9:08am EST

Maggie Gallagher-top

Remember a few weeks back when Maggie Gallagher, president of the National Organization for Marriage, and blogger Andrew Sullivan went toe to toe at a  Cato Institute seminar? The organization’s president said out gays and lesbians worked for it. She declined to name names at the time, but we thought it would be a great story/interview. Gays and lesbians working for NOM, an organization fighting hard against gay marriage? Who wouldn’t want to write about that? After some emails and a phone call to  NOM’s press person, who was polite and professional, Gallagher “declined to comment.”

I’m not one to tell the other side how to sell its ideas, but if I were her the  gays and lesbians allegedly working for NOM would be playing point. Can you think of a more effective photo-op against gay marriage than gays standing shoulder to shoulder with Gallagher?

Gallagher could have simply been forgetful with the truth when discussing the deep ties NOM has with LGBT peoples, but no need to take it there. Last week the folk over at Box Turtle pointed to at least one gay guy who agrees with the group.  His name is David Benkof, a/k/a David Bianco, and from Box Turtle’s account it’s understandable why NOM hasn’t picked him as their spokes-gay-guy.  He has trouble quoting people accurately….and other “issues” (yeah, I’m being polite).

Well if you are reading this Ms. Gallagher, the offer remains. We’ll gladly talk to you and your gay fans.

    • matt87,

“Believe it or not the anti-gay rights gays are out there.”

Well, DUH! You may be to young to remember Roy Cohn. Maybe even Larry Craig. But THIS was just 2 days ago right here on this site:

Closeted gay people are our own worst enemies. They take it out on those courageous enough to live honest, loving lives so they, themselves, won’t have to admit their ‘awful truth’. Effing hypocrites.

    • Folks — Gallagher claimed that they had “out” GLBT people working for them. A revelation that there were closed-cases there would be non-news, but the thought that “out” gay folks who work for NOM would be news indeed. If those folks are “out” they should have no problem having their name and presence known. Frankly, I cannot imagine a scenario where an “out” GLBT person would be working for NOM — even a Log Cabin Repugnican.
Let’s be candid here: Gallagher is undoubtedly lying and her failure to cite examples means that she has been caught in the lie. This has nothing to do with the closeted or the ‘Larry Craigs’ of this world; they are another case altogether.

    • I believe it.. i have met a few out gays who are against gay marriage

    • come on, we all have run into gays not for marriage. The ones I’ve met have always been against it as a straight instutition, one that reminds them of the chains it created for their mothers and grandmothers and the discomfort for them as aunts kept asking why they were not married.

I even was agains “societally ordained fucking” as I called it. At the time I never, ever thought I would be married, even while in a relationship that is still strong today, 25 years later.

I don’t think it is about not wanting equality, it is about feeling superior to straight society that rushes to the altar only to find later that it is not eternal bliss…..and/or those of us who think its relgious overtones are tacky.

Now that I’m happily married, and about a year before, I realized how important it is as a symbol of equality. I still laugh at some of the stupid things straight society does, like deny their own natural sexuality, have children they can’t afford just because everyone expects them to and even witness married couples spend zero time together and wonder why they ever got married.

I’ve gotten over the elitisim..there are smart straights and dumb ones, same with gays, I try to hang out with smart people, regardless of sexuality when before I thought it was only possible to do that amongst other gays.

our unique journey forces us to acknowledge our differences and at times feel better than the oppressive world we eschew. Combined with irrational youth, it can create the elitism that I think is behind gays against marriage.

    • I don’t think it’s unusual. There are women against women’s equality. There are anti-Semitic Jews. There are Uncle Toms. Why should our category be any different?

There are a lot of gay people who do not believe marriage is a goal worth pursuing, for a variety of reasons including philosophy and priority (and some less charitable reasons).

The thing to keep in mind is that these types of people are always the minority within the minority. They are never anybody’s hero. But they probably will become the subject of an Award-winning movie a few decades from now. Maybe that’s their angle.

    • If they’re so “out”, then why are they afraid to step forward and make themselves known. They’re either cowards or non-existant. I wouldn’t believe anything Gallagher says. I once had an email exchange with her and one of the questions I posited was…”if you (Gallagher) had a gay child, would you be supportive of discrimination against him or her”? She refused to respond. In other words, silence gives consent. Why should we believe this lying bitch on anything? If she has gays working for her, then they must be Log Cabiners and we all know what they’re about.

    • They have gays working for their side? Well hey, we probably have some bigots working for our side (if we dug around a bit). (did I say that?)

  • Jay Said: March 10th, 2010 at 4:01 pm
    • Of course they have gay supporters: former Senator Craig, thousands of Catholic priests, California state senator Ashburn, that crazy Evangelical minister who was buying gay sex, among others of a similar ilk.

    • I don’t understand those who ask “why don’t they go public?”

As if it was somehow logical to want to open up yourself and your family to that level of notoriety in today’s 24-hour news cycle world filled with opinionated extremists?

  • Ken Cage Said: March 10th, 2010 at 8:55 pm
    • Just one look at Maggie Gallagher is enough to turn any man gay! Hardly the poster girl for straight marriage! Ugly, fat bitch

    • >could have simply been forgetful with the truth

      I *love* this expression. May I steal/use it? :-)
