Well, you can’t fault the LCR for not trying. But it should by now be obvious that their party is pushing them even farther into the margins. If, as they state, they seek classical conservatism in the form of small government, fiscal responsibility, and lower taxes, I cannot imagine why they don’t just become libertarians. The latter party doesn’t much cotton to bigotry as an ideology. RNC chairman Steele has made his views abundantly clear (‘What? Are you crazy?’). LCR, it’s time to realize that Rush Limbaugh is your leader. Take your cash to another party that will appreciate your values and not sucker-punch you at the same time!

I agree with Daniel, I can’t imagine why any sane gay person would support the GOP, let alone belong to the Log Cabin Republicans! To me they seem to be a sorry group of self hating misguided people, whom I feel sad for.
The GOP has embraced every form of extremism and intolerance there is in the U.S. The religious extremists embraced and courted by the GOP have professed their hate towards gay people, and anything that might represent gay. Over these past 8 years, the GOP proved to be everything but fiscal conservative, and for smaller government. Our government grew more under Bush than under any other President over the past 60 years!, fiscal conservative? that is a joke right? not only did the GOP backed President and Congress eat through the surplus, but they created the biggest deficit our country has ever seen! all thanks to an unnecessary and unjust war and 1.35 trillion dollars in tax cuts for the corporations and the wealthy Americans. The GOP laughs at the mention of civil rights and civil liberties, the very basic premise this country was founded. And we see what Bush did to our Constitution!
So what exactly is the GOP draw? Bigotry, elitism, christian extremism, intolerance, religious intolerance, homophobia, sexism, intolerance for culture, arts, education, inequality. What is the draw for these Log cabin Republicans? for the life of me, I just don’t get it.
Is it that, like some in many minority communities believe, by associating themsleves with the oppressor, they will somehow and miraculously cease to be oppressed and discriminated against? That never works! The oppressors will only use these people as pawns to further their agenda of intolerance, bigotry and hate. Members of the opperssor party will never accept members of the oppressed groups, no matter how much they try to “assimilate”, they will never be accepted as same. Oh, those poor misguided Log Cabin people, I do feel sorry for them.

The reason why third parties never work in this country is because once one actually gains a foot hold the other two look at it, and start taking chunks of it’s platform and there by destroy it.

While I am a fairly left leaning person, I’d love to see the day when the LCR are a legitimate wing of the GOP. I look at Steele and think that his ideas could actually help them, but I don’t think the 50+ year old white guys w/o children who currently control the party will let him do it. The partisan in me smiles at this in the short term, but long term I worry. Single party control is never a good thing. Look at Nazi Germany, Soviet Russian, and Communist China (*caveat* they outlawed all other parties).

Personally if I could work my will, short term I’d make the Dems 80-90%, get equality, universal health care, and get college costs down; and then after that break the two parties into 4-6 different ones. That way you don’t get “Oh you’re Republican, that must mean that you favor invading every other country, leaving poor people to rot in poverty, making Christianity the state religion and opposing any form of “let’s not be mean to Gay people” legislation. We also wouldn’t get “Oh you’re Democrat, that must mean that you favor taking away my guns, disbanding the military, and…{insert Rush Limbaugh’s rant of the week}.”

I don’t think if Republicans embraced gays and became a “big tent” that they’d find their way back to power. Republicans lost because we had almost every policy that the Heritage foundation churned out and the country went in the crapper. Even after 8 years of tax cuts they are still beating that pulverized dead horse to get out of our current economic woes (a crisis which was the result of Republican policies). Short of it is, Republicans are ideologues and their “ideas” suck.

you’re absolutely right Don. there is very little if any difference whatsoever. however. the Gay Community will,sadly, continue to support “either/or” of our “two” party(in reality ONE)system. Why? Because just like heteros the vast “majority’ of homos out there have fallen into the voting “rut” and just don’t have the gumption to want to pull themselves out! sad but alas, very, very true. Quick sickening to see just how mainstream minded our community has become. good thing sites like this exist for us to vent on, otherwise we might actually be out there trying to accomplish something! LMAO!

Leave it to Whithers to defend the indefensible – again. I would have more respect for LCR if they didn’t endorse people who hate them. I can identify the wish for fiscal restraint – but one can do that in the DNC. I can’t abide by anyone who would sell out their gay brothers and sisters for a tax cut and vote for the people who hate them. That’s a little too much for me to reconcile. I have no respect for people who empower those who would do harm to me and my family. LCR was once a good organization, then they sold out in an attempt to get a seat at the RNC table – guess what – they weren’t wanted there. LCR has taken advantage of all the hard work of the gay community and spit in its face for tax cuts. Needless to say, I don’t wish any single one of them well.

Paul Koering, R-Fort Ripley, told KLKS on Friday that he will not vote for the Marriage and Family Protection Act, a bill that would make Minnesota’s marriage laws gender-neutral, allowing same-sex couples many of the rights currently denied by Minnesota statute. Koering, who is gay and a Republican, said he would vote against it because the state faces bigger problems.”

I can’t imagine a Gay Senator who thinks Gay problems belong on the back burner. What an A**.

Log Cabins can kiss my butt. They are idiots and ignorant. Like they achieved so much through their fundraising and contributions to the Bush campaigns, only to experience the other of his two faces. Compassionate Conservatism/Big Tent? HA! Really makes me MAD some of us are so easily deceived. What a total waste of time, effort, and money…

Holy flying tampons… I’m so glad for this article. I have been considering trying to bring back moderate hip hop republicans myself. Ever since my own democratic party abadoned me with the white guilt of electing our current president.
Once obama was the D’s candidate I actually attended a log cabin function and frankly, it wasn’t any better or worse than the democrats. A third party would never work because this country is filled with lemmings.
