Withers: Straight hysteria hits Atlanta

Maybe the stinky economy is drying up logic cells. Could be people are reeling from Alez Rodriguez’s steroid use confession. Possibly the Nadya Suleman drama is making a few of us nutty. Whatever the cause, hysteria over gays and lesbians has taken over some minds in West Virginia and Morehouse College in Atlanta.

An organization called wv4marriage has a video out arguing how homosexual radicals are looking to pass laws that will force churches to hire gay porn stars and make good Christians  replace their cross with chaps and lube. Okay, they don’t say that but they might as well. According to them West Virginia is now the epicenter of the same sex marriage debate and the rights of straight couples are now under attack. Look at this line spouted by the narrator.

“A weekend trip to San Francisco for a West Virginia same-sex couple, plus a pro-bono ACLU attorney, could easily become a nightmare for marriage in West Virginia.”

Really? Really? Do the good people of wv4marriage know what a newspaper is? Have they been paying attention to what happened to same sex marriage in California? That is a dumb question. Of course they have, but facts are no good when you are peddling propaganda.

Farther down in the land of Dixie, Morehouse College student Gerren Gaynor wonders how much an institution has to do to accept gay students. For those not in the know Morehouse is an all male historically black college with a illustrious list of graduates (Dr Martin Luther King was a proud “Morehouse man”). Gaynor gets credit for being honest about life on his campus: too many straight Morehouse students have issues with their gay brothers and the corners of the closet are where many gay Morehouse men remain.

However, Gaynor joins his West Virginia peers by easily and rather blithely jumping on the stereotype train.

“If you like men, be my guest and date men. But if you are born a man, you should be just that–a man. If I have to look twice to tell if I’m looking at a man or woman on an all-male campus, then something is tragically wrong.”

He then wonders what his school will do when a Morehouse man wants a sex change. A pertinent question because as we all know gay men are really women just looking for that chance to get vaginas. Gaynor ends his hysterics with paragraphs that show he can’t distinguish between gay men, feminine men, and transgender students. They are all one in the same and damage his institution.

And by the way: I’m not a betting man but if a white student wrote that his black peers were damaging the “image” of his school, Gaynor would be screaming bloody murder and asking for an investigation by the Justice Department.

    • Interesting to note that the homophobic vocal portion of Atlanta & Georgia are as good at avoiding facts & promoting stereotypes today as they were when I lived there in 1980-87.

    • If the California Supreme Court doesn’t destroy prop 8, we will be up against reckless hate by christian fundamentalists. We will need to destroy that brand of religion! Sign me up now, and sign me up ten minutes ago!

    • Maybe this Gaynor person (I won’t call him a gentleman) should be made to watch the DVDs of a show that was on Bravo back in 2003 called Boy Meets Boy and see if he can pick out who’s gay and who’s straight.

    • Seriously. Does there need to be anything more said. An educated black man said those things. Which is similar to the rednecks in West Virginia. I said it once and I will say it again, gay is our predominate culture, and if you don’t believe it, people like Mr. Gaynor cetainly do.

    • James,

I wanna know where do I sign up for my vagina?! I’ve been dreaming about it since little Sally Ann showed me hers when we were 8. It was just SO pretty and compact — unlike the cumbersome piece of meat I’ve been satisfying so many lovers with over the years.

      Yeah. I want my vagina.

      ** Sarcasm aside — excellent piece!! **

    • Mr. Withers, this is a story from the “other side”. I am on a couple of email lists of the “enemy” under another name. It’s my way of staying informed of what may be around the bend for us. You may have already heard or read about this, but is here for your perusal if not.

    • There should be no single sex colleges or universities. What happened to Title XI?

    • Dr King would be outraged that he has paved the way for such a man to be created equal and here he is treating others the way he would have been treated not so long ago. I say we pray for this guy,and instead of showing him hate we show him love. We will never get anywhere if we continue to hate others. We have to be something bigger than that. I know it is over said but don’t you think it is time that we stick to the facts and take the high road

    • “Do the good people of wv4marriage know what a newspaper is?” Do you know what a dictionary is? You need to look up the word “good.” This is as disgusting as those moronic newscasters who refer to an alleged rapist or murderer as a “gentleman.”

    • LOL – Tiger,

That was primarily when I lived in Cincinnati. Cincinnati is very much a closeted city. The more masculine guys are very deeply closeted. (Or at least were)

But I’m in Metro Atlanta, now. By in far, the gay men (and women) are far more masculine looking than the str8 folk.

    • Trace,

I hear what you’re saying, yet I have found more the opposite to be true in my personal experience. If I had a dollar for every time a gay man asked me if I was sure I am gay, I could afford to bsil out another investment bank. Those of us who are naturally masculine seem to throw off many in our community who think we should all be sitting around singing showtunes and sipping apple martinis (I don’t drink so I’m guessing here LOL). Guess that’s why stereotypes suck……

    • ~”…If I have to look twice to tell if I’m looking at a man or woman on an all-male campus, then something is tragically wrong.”~

Yeah — it’s true. We all look alike — ‘normal’ people can’t tell us apart.

What’s tragically wrong is that Gaynor cares, one way or the other. Get a life and STFU!

      - Withers, you always make me laugh. You have a way of breaking things down to point the craziness of things.

You know, I used to be told all the time that I can’t possibly be gay and that I was not serious. Why? Because so many straight people don’t believe gay men play sports and/or that they look like women. No kidding, there remain (as evidenced by the Morehouse comments) a whole group of people that think that gay men put on women’s clothes and prance around.

Ahhh, we’ve come so far but have so far yet to go.

  • Marc Said: February 17th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
    • Well said Withers. We need to hunt down these stupid stereotypes and defend ourselves. Enough is enough–it’s time to take this crap head on and appeal to rational, reasaonable people. Please keep reporting this stuff.

    • James,

Well-written, informative and loved the line about gay men wanting vaginas. Well done.
