Withers: Is Barack Obama George Bush 2.0?
Barely a month into the job and there’s chatter among the political blogs that President Barack Obama differs little from the former president now living in Dallas. The Daily Show host Jon Stewart got the ball rolling on Obama’s first day by noting both men used the same rhetoric in their speeches.
That conversation will only get louder after what happened yesterday. The lawsuit Mohamed et al v. Jeppsen Dataplan, Inc. involves 5 men who claim they were flown by the San Jose Boeing subsidiary to CIA secret camps and tortured. The case was thrown out last year because the Bush Administration claimed national security concerns. Yesterday when the suit was brought on appeal, by the ACLU, to the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals the Obama Administration made the same exact argument.
“A source inside of the Ninth U.S. District Court tells ABC News that a representative of the Justice Department stood up to say that its position hasn’t changed, that new administration stands behind arguments that previous administration made, with no ambiguity at all. The DOJ lawyer said the entire subject matter remains a state secret.”
This dearth of hope and change has the ACLU miffed.
“Candidate Obama ran on a platform that would reform the abuse of state secrets, but President Obama’s Justice Department has disappointingly reneged on that important civil liberties issue,” said Anthony D. Romero, executive director of the ACLU. “If this is a harbinger of things to come, it will be a long and arduous road to give us back an America we can be proud of again.”
I really can’t take the ACLU seriously about this. From the famous 2002 speech when Obama came out against the Iraq War to multiple positions he has taken, it’s always been clear Obama is not your standard ACLU liberal. Only “brain-iacs” like Sean Hannity have thought otherwise.

Hey, Gerry Fisher…I supplied four instances, I think. That enough for ya?
Why is anyone surprised?
Obama and Hillary were the only two Democratic candidates that in the first debate declared their support for continuing a “presence” in Iraq, and saw continuing the war there as a given.
Later on, Obama told the entire world that Ronald Reagan was his idol.
This is what happens when people don’t really listen.
Joe Biden should have been our candidate. He got in trouble because he says what he thinks. His stance on national health care and the Iraq war were clear and evident. But, precisely because Biden’s rhetoric was clear and unpolished and honest, he was and still is denigrated as someone who makes verbal political “gaffs”.
Tell ya what, when TRUTH and HONESTY become universally interpreted as “gaffs”, it’s already too late and we’re lost.
Obama and Hillary were and are both Bush 2.0.
Oh yeah…forgot one more example:
Obama recently just repeated his stance on the prosecution of criminals. We should look forward and forget what they did in the past.
This should be the opening statement of every defense attorney in this country:
Your Honor, whether my client committed this crime or not is irrelevent. As the President of the United States has declared regarding criminal acts…let us simply look forward and forget about the past and on that basis I ask for a dismissal of all charges against my client.
Sounds right, yeah?
The story doesn’t end there. Wednesday night the Justice Dept. asked a judge to suspend action on the al-Haramain suit challenging the NSA’s illegal wiretapping program. The reason: allowing the suit to go forward would jeopardize national security.
I have no problem with you stating one case that shows that Obama is doing the exact same case, and I don’t object to criticizing him for it. What I object to is the assertion that ONE CASE, the details of which WE DON’T KNOW, ONE MONTH into his presidency…makes him Bush 2.0. Until you can show multiple cases and patterns that last more than weeks, tone down the rhetoric, wouldya?
I blame President Obama for Rick Waren, Bishop Gene, Ted Haggard, prop 8, DADT,DOMA, and all the anti gay policies in place.I blame him for loosing my job, I blame him for my boyfriend dumping me and I blame him for my anger.I will not vote for him in 2012.
3 weeks in offices and compairsons to Shrub?
that’s a bit of stretch.
dislike his policies but don’t insult the man by comapring him to Shrub
That’s just mean
Thanks to the Rick Warren invitation, the gay community will never give Obama a chance. He’s not getting their vpte in 2012.
Bah Blam!
Being all dramatic and waited to reveal my source in a new comment:
