Withers: An open letter to Kellogg’s

By James Withers, contributing editor, 365Gay Blog 02.06.2009 2:52pm EST

Angry man

Dear Kellog’s:

You are fools and cowards. A 23-year-old wins 14 Olympic golds and you of course want to ride his fame. The kids use a different phrase for it but this is a family site. However, when Michael Phelps gets caught taking a hit from a bong (quick question: how much cocaine has been sniffed in the Kellogg’s board room?), you decide he must be dropped because Phelps’ behavior is “not consistent with the image of Kellogg.”

You must have giggled writing that hot mess because the guy who gave the company its name was as crazy as bat doo! I was sort of hoping mature heads would prevail at Battle Creek, and you would follow the lead put out by Omega, another Phelps sponsor. The watchmakers decided the whole story was a “non-issue.” Hey Omega: once I start making some cash I’m getting one of your products!

I know what the scolds will say: Phelps is a role model to millions of youngsters, blah, blah. Heck I heard that noise at work already. They will be joined by those who think hysteria is the best voice to use when talking about drug use. Both groups engage in crazy talk. We do children a disservice when we demand heroes with feet of marble as opposed to clay. As for the anti-drug talk camp, rational conversation about drugs would be nice and to equate a bong hit with the death of civilization is waaay from rational.

But you’ve made your decision, went the safe conservative route. Goody for you. Be proud in your cheap moral outrage. Let the mind numbing scolds know how shocked (shocked!) you are by Phelps. As a proud fatty, your products will no longer cross my doorstep. When you start losing cash you’ll know who to blame.

    • Andrew,

      Thanks for the correction.

      Sincerely,

      James

    • “Must of”, James. Really? Is anyone editing you?

That little spelling fiasco to the side, I totally agree with you. This has angered me a great deal. My breakfast choices are definitely going to change.

    • Business decision. What they decide is best for their company is really their decision.

Honestly, I can’t see many elite athletes ingesting a lot of Kelloggs products. I would think that Phelps connection to Kellogg was more detrimental to Phelps than it was to Kelloggs.

Personally, I don’t think that I’ve ever bought one product over another because of who sponsors it.

    • How sanctimonus of Kelloggs,I will look at other cereals to buy.His private life is his own and pot is widely accepted nowadays,so whats the big deal.I like the guy,and none of us are perfect.

    • Tank,

Some of the things I write have gay content. Others do not.

As for the bottom line, why doesn’t Omega cut its losses if Phelps is now so toxic? I understand the bottom line of business is “bidness” and don’t expect board rooms to be havens of liberal thought: however, it seems to me Kellogg’s jumped the gun here.

And yes I’m defending Phelps. I din’t know I was only supposed to defend people who are perfect.

      Enjoy your week-end.

      Sincerely,

      James

    • What really makes them uncomfortable is that it sends the message that using pot doesnt keep you from becoming a record-breaking, Olympic, multiple-gold-medal winner. It might also help explain the 12,000 + calories per day diet.

    • So you’re defending michael phelps who’s apparently as dumb as sock full of rocks for getting caught? This has nothing to do with kelloggs, or the right and wrong of Lurch’s behavior. Your real complaint, withers, is with those who they anticipate would stop purchasing their product as a result of this so-called scandal. This is just scapegoating a business for what they believe is cutting their losses. Businesses aren’t in the BUSINESS of acting contrary to the bottom line. Oh for chrissakes, even acknowledging this in comments is pathetic. WTG, 365gay for yet again providing the HARD HITTING LGBT RELEVANT NEWS AND OPINIONS.

    • Dont they realize how many pop-tarts get eaten by people taking bong hits every year?

    • I agree the whole Michael Phelps thing is way out of hand. I could care less that he was smoking pot. I would care more if he were beating his s/o. Boycotting Kelloggs smacks of AFA, FOF, and the rest of the right wing nut jobs. If you really want to boycott a company, look to Exxon/Mobile. They have been denying same sex couples equal benifits for something like eight years in a row.

    • Kellog’s is dropping Phelps for a photo of him taking a hit on a bong? Really, Kellogs! Thanks, but no thanks. I would ban your product from my pantry shelf, but have already done that years ago when I see all of the harmful, cancer causing ingredients that can harm, and even kill a child. I think I would rather have my child take a ‘hit’ off the bong rather than have him eat your cereal. Much less harmful!

    • I sent an email to Kellogg when I heard they dropped him. Fatty’s rule!!

    • All this Hoopla Over an Alleged Bong Hit??! Get with the times people. Lest see, I never heard of any one being hit by a Stoned Driver, as Opposed to a Drunk Driver; there useually vegging on cartoons or Zepplin. I never heard of any one Killing any one with a gun while being on Pot, ( unless it was laced ). Heck the most Pot heads do is Veg in front of TV order Pizza, play Pog or X box D&D or eat Fluffer Nutters. For those who dont know its peanut butter Sandwiches with Marshmallow fluff instead of Jelly. Hey I have A wonderful Idea on How to Pull the economy out of the hole. LEAGELIZE Pot and sell it in say Liquor Stores. Of COurse the Government would Grow it, Package it test it for Potency and Tax the Hell out of it. Those Taxes would go to the Recovery of the USA. NAAH To Easy, to Simple; and besides “La Familia” wouldnt stand for it! They would go broke.

  • Carlo Said: February 6th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
    • Good old James. You know better than I do that Kellogg doesn’t believe it is a big deal. They are just doing this so that they can look clean. All Kellogg’s employees are laughing at this decision being high from smoking. The next step: empeach the president because he smokes cigarettes!
