Withers: Let’s not get too heated over Prop 8 money

Before the standard yowls of protest, calls for a real gay male representative to write here, or the tortured “you are a racist” logic (my personal fav), allow me to say the easy part.
I’m glad the money trail is public for Prop 8.
If you were willing to give cash to keep gay couples in California from being hitched, be ready to defend your position (especially if you have made your bones on drawing gay iconography).
With all of that said, let’s also not be so shocked that many are against same sex marriage and worked for its demise in California. Disappointed? Sure. But shocked? Come on people.
Remember back in the primaries when all the major contenders for the Democratic prize (Clinton, Edwards, and Obama) voiced their opposition to gay marriage? Was there even a Republican candidate who could say the word lesbian without making a face? While time is on our side (a small comfort to us old heads), all of the polls point to an American public that is still not on board when it comes to the words gay and wedding. Heck even those who are disgusted by anti-gay rhetoric and bigotry pause on the topic.
Does that mean we should stay silent on the topic? Nope. It just means we are going to have to continue to make the case. Again. Again. Again. Again. Again. And again. And more than likely again. Is that fair? Naw, but that is the way minorities make our way in a democracy.
PS: A note to Olympic champion Michael Phelps: here is an “apology” you really should give.

I’m sad to see the initial anger after the passage of Prop 8 seems to have subsided and based on the comments, gays are happy again to sit in the back of the bus like good little boys and girls. With your wimpy attitudes we will get no where. Keep talking, nobody will listen. I’m deleting this site, its full of gay appologists. I don’t have enough years left to sit around and beg bigots, yes bigots, to accept me. You people are pathetic. I hope the younger people keep up the pressure and the fight. We have failed them.
“I don’t believe that just because you don’t believe that gay unions should be called marriages, that makes you a BIGOT.”
It does if it makes you intolerant of them. This isn’t just about belief it’s about people making those beliefs into reality through intolerant laws and policies.
And for what rational reasons? Because they don’t believe in gay marriages? Their religion says it’s wrong? Because of tradition? Gays are icky?
Anti-gay bigotry has been written into the Constitution of California and 29 others states by HATEROSEXUALS. Gay people should be mad. Your Constitutional ability to earn rights through the legistlative, executive and judicial branches have been essentially cut off because of the Constitutional Amendments.
L. “FULL ATTACK IS NECESSARY”? You are kidding ,right??. No wonder people don’t take gay issues seriously. Its good to fight. But fighting stupidly? now thats another issue…………..
We’ve acted like complete drama queen through this whole prop 8 issue. As a gay man, I was mad that prop 8 passed, but the boycotts? targeting specific groups to blame for prop 8. Do you guys know how many Americans are against same-sex marriage?.I don’t believe that just because you don’t believe that gay unions should be called marriages, that makes you a BIGOT. Listen people…, we are diluting the meaning of the word BIGOT.We really are, and people aren’t taking us seriously anymore. I believe that we will win the gay rights movement by building coalitions and creating understanding. People need to understand that we are just like everyone else with families to raise etc and thats why we need the marriage protection. Most people still look at a gay person like a sexual act. We need to show them our human side, but calling them bigots….won’t do it.
Thanks for the link, James. It made my evening.
I could not agree less.
Would we cut any racist (no blacks will be allowed to marry each other), ageist (no people over 65 will be allowed to marry each other), or religious bigots (no Mormons will be allowed to marry each other) slack?
Of course not! Why is it that we must allow for bigots to attack only us?
FULL ATTACK is necessary.
We must question why ANYONE would give to the Yes on 8 campaign. It does not matter whether the donation is $10 or $10 thousand. Bigots must be shown for what they are.
I will not patronize businesses that knowingly support people that are trying to disolve my marriage.
Withers is right
Getting “heated” or angry won’t do anything.
Using this list to help decide where your $$$ is spent is another story.
Let your wallet speak for you. Would this technically be be termed a boicott?
I’m not demanding that anybody accept same-sex marriage, but I AM demanding that they don’t impede it.
Yah, it sounds like we are forcing people to support gay marriage or else………..
You know what, if we are too aggresive going after the so called
‘donors’, it’s gonna backfire on us, coz we will end up sounding like the haters. We can’t go after the donors and ignore the large %age of Americans who do not support gay marriage. It sounds like we are forcing people to support gay marriage, or else??
Stepin Fetchit strikes again …
Don’t get heated; get even.
Boycott every last one of the bigoted a-holes.
I am greatly frustrated how so many law obsesed people can take a simple thing like “equality for all” and turn it into such an ugly thing. Equality means equal! Equal to hold the same job as a straight person. Live in the same neighborhood as a straight person. Get married and have all the benefits of a straight person. Including the benefit of divorce. Why should striaghts be granted all the high paying shitty jobs, get killed for serving their country and suffer through divorce.
