He gets no credit from me. No more free passes. No more excuses.
Mr President, where is your inclusion now that you're in office? We helped get you there and have been seemingly shoved into the first convenient closet to remain unseen and unmentioned ever since.

IS this a serious post on this website? So we won't be upset with Obama for slighting the gays? Ok. What about family funding in the low income bail out? That's fine too right? Just so long as the white males aren't too put out it would seem. Thanks for another installment of your inner brain trust withers.

montrealbren,
"After all, if god loves us, surely he wants us to be happy and married and treated with the same respect afforded to Mr. Warren and his tribe."

Just because God loves you doesn't mean he wants you to be happy living in sin and to have that sin respected.. He's going to send you to Hell for it in the end because you won't accept His love, but He will always be there, waiting for you to accept it and turn away from sin.

That is God's love for everyone.

Think critically instead of emotionally about what it actually means as a whole and who it is coming from, that way you won't be fooled and taken advantage by Warren as is the case that is happening now with people like Withers, yourself, and others.

Good going Mr. Withers.
You're getting beat up badly here. I like the fact that you found one standard to which we can hold Mr. Warren: he said it. And now he'll go back to his purpose driven life and show the world that he's a hypocrite. And you will be there to call him on it.
Yes, indeedy, Mr. Warren gets credit - he's just given us a mouthful of words that he will soon have to turn around and eat. After all, if god loves us, surely he wants us to be happy and married and treated with the same respect afforded to Mr. Warren and his tribe.
That said, our Pres took a calculated risk. He was not pandering to us - he was pandering to the formidable foes he faces. After 43 dividing us to the point that we can no longer have a civilized conversation (see VP Cheney's in-chamber greetings to VT senator - "F*** You" - a few years back), our new Pres is doing exactly what he said (warned?) us he would do: not discriminate based on religious issues. He will leave the discrimination to the religions themselves. But it is ultimately to his credit that he had the nerve to piss us off. Why? Because in all likelihood, there are more Warren-minded folk in the US than there are gay(l,b and t) folk. Moving forward, we need to acknowledge that fact. As much as we'd LOVE to act like Cheney, let's not. Let's practice the tolerance WE preach, even when we're disappointed. Just as the elders among us are still flabbergasted by the fact that the US elected a black man as its president, we have seen that our wildly conservative nation CAN CHANGE ITS MIND. As frustrating as our current civil rights situation is, we cannot lose sight of the fact that we have more hearts and minds to change. Having been bullied for most of our lives, we know how useless such tactics would be for our overall cause. That's the problem with our democracy: you need to build consensus. Implicit therein are concessions. Luckily, if a cause is noble, those concessions are later challenged in court and if they are unfair, they are whittled away.
The president's inauguration speech, I believe, was enough of a first-day stab in the back to the Christian-based presidency of 43. As has been noted, Obama has done nothing for our "community" so far. Frankly, after 100 hours in office, I'm really not surprised - or even offended. We elected a centrist who will govern from the center. Let's not get our knickers in a twist just yet. We're on a better path now. That's all I really feel. Given what we've been though as a nation, that's a good feeling. Given what he was elected to do, I can wait a while longer for our President to address our minority concerns. For those that feel deeply betrayed by Warren's appearance at the inauguration: I feel for you, but I also expect you to realize that we cannot get where we need to be by demonizing most Americans. Let's just work on changing their minds: it is obvious that this is not impossible. Just look who's running the country.

Take it from someone standing in the crowed, Rev. Warren’s prayer was not well received. When he had called out President Obama’s children’s names it sounded perverted. Someone commented behind me that he sounded like an excited pedophile. I don’t claim to know what an excited pedophile sounds like, but the majority of the people standing around me agreed. To me Warren’s speech was self-centered, it was a speech written to make him look good. It certainly was not a prayer for the global audience; it kind of gave us all the creeps.

James,
"I’m not a person of faith but I’ll give the man credit for this: he said God’s love was for everyone God made."

Why are you giving him credit for that? Do even know what it is he is saying since you are not a person of faith?

Lazy. Giving credit to a fantastic bigot who has been whitewashing his anti-gay record in the face of an outcry. He and his PR firm scrubbed his website, release meaningless platitudes and you fall for his duplicitous prayer. Wake up!

How to be uninclusive, Rick Warren style: Start by addressing God as Father. (Alienates a lot of feminists!) End with the Lord's Prayer. (Alienate BOTH Jews and Muslims.) Use the protestant ending "for thine is the kingdom.." (Alienate a lot of Catholics as well.) Use "trespasses" instead of "debts." (I thought Baptists were debtors???) Great job, Rick! Next time, Mr President, forget the prayers. Oh, and get a new chief justice while you're at it.
