The GLBT community better quickly come to the realization that we are ALONE in this fight for equality. Politicians throw popular supportve rhetoric at the airwaves making us and other somewhat liberal thinkers believe they wll help us reach our 14th Amendment rights. The truth is that since it is unpopular with the "Most Bigoted Religious Right" and other Homophobes, they only use rhetoric and not deeds to further our cause. We need to use our considerable disposable wealth to destroy the political and media careers of those who pretend to support us and then do the opposite. We must also support Dan Savage as the spokesperson for the GLBT community as he is not afraid to take on Hannity, Coulter, Warren or any of the other hate mongers of America.

I agree. Don't waste your money by donating to NGTLF or any other organization that seeks an "alliance" with African-American or other groups. The money is better spent on litigation, communication and lobbying. Lambda Legal is an example of a better choice.

For those who want more direct political involvement, consider this: If the Republican Party is smart, they will take advantage of divisions exposed by Prop 8. If the Republicans can convincingly change their racist ways, they can attract quite a number of African American voters who are, in many respects, socially conservative. That will be disastrous for us.

Move money away from the false strategy of alliance-building, and into on-the-ground political efforts to encourage the Republican party to adhere to its racist tendencies. That will keep them out of power and increase our chances of gay-friendly judicial appointments and legislation.

"Gay organizations from the beginning have helped other groups and have received little in return. It’s not about gay people or gay organizations reaching out it’s the other way around"

Because there are other people in the gay community than white middle class gay men.

Do black and brown straight people feel that they are in such dire straits that they would need to have an alliance with a bunch of queers?

Do we have any goals in common? Is there any legislation that gay people could support that would benefit racial equality. Is there any favor to trade?

The gay community should be working on being more inclusive of LGBTs of color and caring about LGBTs of color when attacked or discriminated against. Because gay people aren't actually a single race. Most gays might be white, but that's just statistical odds. Race should not be part of the overall gay identity. As individuals we each have a racial class, and an economic class, and a gender, etc. But the gay community itself doesn't, or shouldn't, represent a particular race.

Black organizations are known for using other groups for their own gain and never returning the favor.

“The fact is - regardless of how much NGLTF would wish otherwise - that the gay community does not truly have a strategic alliance with black voters.”

Maybe we could start as individuals by working on our human relationships with black people.

Rodney Moore Said: January 6th, 2009 at 2:18 pm

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is one of those organizations which pays far far more attention to issues(abortion, affirmative action, social security, immigration reform) which don’t effect, or only nominally effect LGBT Americans. This group takes enormous pains to form alliances with other groups, such as NARAL, NAACP, National Council of La Raza all of which don’t give two sh*ts about gay and lesbian issues.

Race had just as much to do with the passage of Prop 8 as did religion. In fact black women, who we gay people expect more from, considering their adversity, were the ones who voted overwhelmingly for Prop 8.

Gay people cannot be faulted for not reaching out to African Americans and other racial minorities. In regard to African-Americans gay people expected that given their history of oppression, that black people would be the FIRST to understand. However, black people contrary to what the NGLTF and NAACP would have us believe, are just as capable of being bigots as white people.

It's not "an NGLTF study."

It's a study written by Professors Patrick Egan (NYU) and Kenneth Sherrill.

The study was commissioned by the Haas Foundation for the NTGLF Policy Institute (it's think tank arm).

I find it truly bizarre that people who openly admit they do not understand the mathematical sections of the Egan-Sherrill Report but yet want to misstate the conclusions as well as attempt to "refute" any claim which may
challenge their apparently deeply held beliefs that Black people are more homophobic than others.

The data simply don't show that.

The data shows (very clearly) that party identification (i.e. Republicans), ideology (conservativsm) and religion (weekly church attendance) were BY FAR larger factors in the passage of Prop 8. This is unsurprising when you see that Republicans voted YES on Prop 8 at rates approximating 80% while Democrats only voted NO on Prop 8 at a rate approximating 60%.

He's not the only one. I think he did an admirable job of refuting the NGLTF's faux study, but he's honest about lacking certain expertise that the people who made the study at the NGLTF certainly lacked as well. I did go through the study, and can honestly say that there's not a competent statistician on the ngltf's payroll...and could do a point by point refutation that would likely bore all, but I think kincaid pretty much put this one to bed. In fact, this study is just another barrier to trying to solve this intractable problem...not even admitting it exists, really, is a problem, too.

I agree that it doesn't seem that they'll see eye to eye anytime soon. My hope is that racist comments aren't made on this board...

I have to agree; there is no alliance between blacks and gays.

There's also no alliance between latinos and gays, or asians and gays, or whites and gays.

Using race as an identifier for how a person treats others or should be treated themselves is as ridiculous as using their sexual orientation. A person's race isn't a factor.

Their religious views, on the other hand, IS a factor; the most significant one.
