(Bay Minette, Alabama) A 21 year old Alabama
woman has been sentenced to 20-years in prison after pleading guilty to taking
part in the 2004 murder of a gay teen.
In a plea bargain with prosecutors to avoid a
trial where she could have been sentenced to death if convicted, Nichole Bryars Kelsay pleaded guilty
conspiracy to
commit murder.
Two other people already have been sentenced to
lengthy prison terms for the murder of 18-year old Scotty Joe Weaver.
Prosecutors said the murder was motivated in
large part because Weaver was gay.
Weaver was attacked and murdered in his trailer
home in July 2004.
His body was then carted to a quiet dirt road
where his killers set it on fire and then casually drove off, after robbing him
of between $65 and $80.
A man driving an all-terrain vehicle discovered
Weaver's severely burned and decomposed body
Last week Robert Holly Lofton Porter, 21, pleaded
guilty to intentional murder and was sentenced to two consecutive live terms. (story)
In May, Christopher Gaines, 22, was sentenced to
life without parole after pleading guilty. (story)
Gaines and Kelsay were Weaver's roommates. Porter
was described as a friend of the pair who spent a considerable amount of time at
Weaver's home.
All three were out of work, and Weaver was paying
the bills. The prosecution said that the trio plotted Weaver's death several
days before the killing.
Kelsay, 21, was silent as she was sentenced and
did not respond when Weaver's asked her why she did it.
