(Toronto, Ontario) A 46 year old married
father has been charged with first degree murder in the fleecing and
disappearance of an elderly Toronto gay man.
Police were called earlier this month after
neighbors reported not having seen 72 year old Harley Walker for several
days. Inside the house in the Cabbagetown area of the city police found
what they describe as the indication of a violent struggle, including a
considerable amount of blood.
Investigators also found the Walker's bank
account had been cleaned out and other assets had been cashed in. A check
of Walker's computer showed he had met a man in a popular gay chat site and had
arranged to meet at Walker's home.
Police issued an arrest warrant for David Kenton
Reid on a charge of aggravated assault. Shortly after that his vehicle was found
crashed in Meaford, a small community more than 100 miles northwest of Toronto.
Reid, 46, was arrested in the area on the weekend
after eluding police for a week.
Walker's body has not been found. Over the
weekend police with tracking dogs and local residents combed dense bush in the
area. Toronto investigators believe Walker is buried in the area.
Police believe the case is a kidnapping-extortion plot gone
wrong. Reid appeared briefly in court Monday morning where the charge against
him was formally upgraded to murder. If he is convicted he could face up
to 25 years in prison.
Investigators believe Reid, an unemployed former
former investment banker used the gay Web site to find vulnerable older gay men
to con.
Walker, originally from England, had worked for
more than 30 years as a technician at the Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation. Neighbors say he was well liked and was often seen gardening
at the front of his home.
