Gay Priest Runs For Canadian Parliament
by The Canadian Press

October 27, 2006 - 7:00 pm ET

(Montreal) A priest has been acclaimed as the Bloc Quebecois candidate in a byelection next month.

Rev. Raymond Gravel needed permission from the Vatican to be allowed to run in the Nov. 27 byelection in the Montreal riding of Repentigny.

Gravel, who was a male prostitute and worked in a gay leather bar in his youth, is a maverick who has sparred with the Roman Catholic Church over issues such as same-sex marriage.

He is the parish priest in St-Joachim-de-la-Plaine Church in the separatist Bloc stronghold riding, which is vacant because MP Benoit Sauvageau died in a traffic accident in August.

Gravel has said he wants to run for Parliament to fight for justice.

He says he has great admiration for Sauvageau and wants to continue his work.
