(Vancouver, British Columbia) British Columbia
medical officials have begun an investigation into reports that a doctor who
died last week had unprotected sex with dozens of other men.
Dr. Frank Sigurdson, 71, was found dead last week
in his hot tub in Okanagan Falls.
The probe was launched after a man came forward
saying that he had unprotected sex with the doctor, who at one time specialized
in HIV/AIDS.
Mark Carney tells the Vancouver Sun that he
went to
police and the Interior Health Authority to raise alarms about Sigurdson's sex
life.
He also admits to having confronted Sigurdson
at his home. After the doctor's body was discovered he was interviewed by
police. The cause of Sigurdson's death has not been made public, but police
say foul play is not suspected.
Carney tells the Sun that he is one of dozens
of gay and bisexual men who had sex with Sigurson.
"People need to know that Frank was having lots of unprotected sex
with people. He never told me he was HIV-positive, and he didn't tell other
people either," Carney told the paper.
He also provided the Sun with an e-mail Sigurdson
had sent to a friend in which he said he had been HIV-positive for at least four years, but
denied having
unprotected sex.
In the e-mail Sigurdson claimed he contracted the virus "after a needle prick
from a woman I was injecting varicose veins for," but that he was in
great health and had "no virus detectable."
Carney said that he will not know his own HIV
status until test results come back from a provincial lab.
Dr. Paul Hasselback, the chief medical officer for the Interior
Health Authority, confirmed he is investigating Carney's allegations.
ARC, the AIDS Resource Center for
the Okanagan, has issued an advisory warning people who had sexual contact with Sigurdson to
get tested. The allegations are embossing to ARC. Sigurdson was a prominent member of the
association and had served as a director from 2003
until 2005.
